Heraclea (Heraclia in Latin, Ηράκλεια in Greek-Byzantine) is a municipality Venetian in the province of Venice, overlooking the Gulf of Venice.

To know

Eracleamare is today the riviera of the city of Eraclea and is part of the Venetian coast; it is located six kilometers south-east of the capital and is characterized by its environmental peculiarities (the Laguna del Mort and the maritime pine forest). The dunes are often divided into several cords, all parallel to the sea. The beach is over four kilometers long. Eraclea Mare has obtained from the FEE the recognition of the Blue Flag for 4 consecutive years, 2007 2008 2009 and 2010, for the quality of its bathing and services on the coast.

Eracleamare is the first and only Italian tourist resort to have achieved a system of total eco-compatibility: 60% of tourist waste is recycled thanks to the practice of separate collection already used throughout the territory of the Municipality of Eraclea. Also for this reason, Eraclea Mare received from the Blue Guide of Legambiente, both in 2009 and in 2010, the attribution of the "3 Sails" for the beach and the "4 Stars" for the environment. On 11 May 2010 the FEE certified Eraclea's bathing offer for the fourth consecutive year, awarding it again the "Blue Flag of the beaches" also for 2010.

In the August 2010 issue of "Tourists by chance", the magazine by Patrizio Roversi and Siusy Blady, Eraclea Mare and the Laguna del Mort beach have been included in the list of the 30 most beautiful beaches in Italy.

During 2011 Eraclea is certifying its beach EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme): it is an environmental quality mark introduced by the European Community that will allow the Municipality to improve its efficiency and its environmental performance, thus implementing a sustainable economic development.

On 10 May 2011 it received confirmation of the recognition of the blue flag also for 2011, the fifth consecutive year of certification of the quality of bathing in the tourist resort.

The agricultural area overlooking the Mort lagoon was recently the subject of an attempt at large building speculation, averted both by the institution of naturism in the competent part of the municipality of Jesolo, and subsequently by a criminal investigation that involved local politicians.

Until 4 November 1950 it was called Grisolera; on that date, with decree no. 1061 of the President of the Italian Republic Luigi Einaudi, but on the initiative of the then mayor Guerrino Burato and the municipal secretary rag. Aldo Tassoni and following a municipal resolution, the name was changed to that of the ancient Roman-Byzantine city, Heraclea in fact, the remains of which are located on the border of the municipal territory in the direction of San Donà di Piave near the town of Cittanova.

Background

The territory of Eraclea from the time of the barbarian invasions until the twelfth century hosted a thriving center (called Melidissa, Heracliana is Civitas Nova), among the most important of the Venetian Lagoon and for a period the capital of the Duchy of Venice.

Towards the 12th century a flood changed the balance of the local water network, leading the Piave to flow into the current Cavallino coast. The area became swampy and malarial and the city was soon abandoned.

The current town was founded around the middle of the seventeenth century (shortly after the war of Candia) as Grisolèra. The locality, partly reclaimed by the Serenissima, was so called because it is still surrounded by marshes and marsh reeds, called grisiòle due to the gray color of the plume. The territory, nestled between the last stretch of the Piave river and that of the Livenza river, remained sparsely populated until the reclamation of the thirties, not only because of the marshy territory, but also because of the endemic malaria. Suffice it to remember that, until the beginning of the swamp drainage work, 82% of the municipal territory was occupied by stretches of water, canals, reeds and marshes.

At the beginning of the eighteenth century, in the area of the present Piazza Garibaldi, near the embankment of the Piave, a church was built dedicated to the Immaculate Conception and the Rosary, becoming a parish on 4 October 1728. Grisolera became an autonomous municipality in 1806 with the establishment of the Kingdom ofItaly controlled by Napoleon. With the birth of the Kingdom Lombard-Veneto in 1815, the municipality was suppressed and its territory divided between San Donà is Cavazuccherina because there were just 1,018 inhabitants. In 1818 it became an autonomous municipality.

From 1866, a municipality of the new Kingdom of Italy, Grisolera was occupied by the Austro-Hungarian army following the Caporetto offensive until the liberation following the battle of Vittorio Veneto. The front line settled on the embankment of the Piave, along the western border of Eraclea, from the end of the battle of the Solstice (22 July 1918) until the Austro-Hungarian retreat following the breakthrough of the battle of Vittorio Veneto (4 November 1918). In covering the retreat, the Italian army blew up all the dams and embankments of the reclamation, then just started: the entire municipal territory was once again flooded and swamped for the rest of the war. What had not been flooded by the retreating Italian III Army, it was by the Austro-Hungarian army at the time of the last retreat, as a consequence of the battle of Vittorio Veneto.

The widespread human presence began with the public reclamation after the First World War (Consortium Ongaro Inferiore, then Lower Piave Reclamation Consortium).

In 1919 the reclamation works were immediately resumed and continued throughout the 1920s and early 1930s. From the activity carried out by cav. Marco Aurelio Meals for the drying up of the marshes located behind the sandy coastal strip (Valle Livenzuola) was born the beach of Eraclea: Marina di Santa Croce (it will then be baptized Eracleamare at the beginning of the seventies).

Precisely during those first embankment activities of the emerged lands, the activity that led to the birth of that maritime pine forest which is the main peculiarity of the Heracleense coast began: the cav. Pasti, in union with the neighboring owners of the Ossi Valley (Conti Gaggia), in the early twenties planted the dunes that ran along the coast with thousands of common pines (Pinus pinea).

The latter were used to reinforce the sandy hills, preserving them from the erosion of the wind and storm surges.
