Hanau, the Brothers Grimm City is located at the confluence of the Kinzig in the Main, east of Frankfurt in Hesse and has approx. 90,000 inhabitants. Hanau belongs to Main-Kinzig district.
Districts
Hanau officially consists of 10 districts, which, however, do not play a role either locally or for tourists.
Historic Hanau consists of the core city with the Lamboy settlement and Kesselstadt, which was incorporated into Hanau in 1907. The very village-like Mittelbuchen in the foothills of the Wetterau joined the city of Hanau in a very tight decision in 1971 and is also treated here for reasons of practicality.
The districts Steinheim am Main and Klein-Auheim historically belonged to the Offenbach district and thus not, like the rest of Hanau, to Kurhessen, but to Hessen-Darmstadt. These districts are treated separately due to their independent tourist importance.
The districts are also treated separately Großauheim and Wolfgang, which were also incorporated into Hanau in 1974 - with some violent protests.
background
The city of Hanau can look back on a very eventful history. The old town of Hanau with the former city palace was built on an island in the Kinzig estuary and has been the residence of the Counts of Hanau since the Middle Ages. In the 16th century, Count Philipp Ludwig II built the new town of Hanau as a planned town from the drawing board for Calvinist refugees who brought valuable craft knowledge to the town and thus developed economic impetus. The old and new towns were separated for years and not only had their own administration and mayor, but also two separate town fortifications.
Hanau profited to a large extent from industrialization; Many large companies settled here, many of which are world-class today (e.g. Heraeus), and Hanau also became an important railway junction and thus also a classic railway town. During and after the imperial era, Hanau also developed into an important garrison town with numerous barracks and a strong military presence.
During the Second World War, the city of Hanau was almost completely destroyed by air raids. The ruins of numerous historical buildings, including the city palace, the city theater, the armory and the remaining remains of the city fortifications, were demolished in the post-war period and the city was instead rebuilt in the style of the 1950s, which is why the city itself offers few sights. Closed streets with old half-timbered houses can only be found in Kesselstadt, which survived the war much better.
Despite the number of inhabitants, Hanau's infrastructure is extremely weak. Restaurants, hotels, nightlife, shopping opportunities outside of the cheap junk shops, all that is missing in Hanau. In addition to the largely missing sights, this is mainly due to the very low purchasing power in the city itself (after Offenbach, Hanau has the highest rate of social benefit recipients in Hesse). Since 2012, Hanau has been trying to modernize the city through radical urban redevelopment and thus attract more visitors to the city, which has been made possible primarily by the withdrawal of the US Army and the huge conversion areas that have become free. But even though we are on the verge of becoming a big city, the situation has not improved significantly. The shopping malls that the city is so proud of (especially the forum in the city center) hit the city center hard and caused large vacancies.

By plane
The nearest major airport is that airport Frankfurt
(IATA: FRA). From there you can take the S8 S-Bahn to Hanau Hbf, this train has been running around the clock (including at night) since the last timetable change. Taking the ICE from the airport makes little sense, as you almost always have to change trains in Frankfurt.
By train
- 1 Hanau main station

The Hanau main station is a central traffic junction in the eastern Rhine-Main area and also an important long-distance traffic stop. The ICE trains from Berlin via Frankfurt to Munich as well as from Berlin to Basel and from Hamburg to Vienna stop here. In addition, all regional trains that travel eastwards from Frankfurt to Würzburg / Aschaffenburg or Fulda / Wächtersbach stop here. Last but not least, the Hanau main station is also the end point of the S8 and S9 S-Bahn lines of the Rhein-Main S-Bahn.
The main train station is relatively far from the city center or other sights. So you either have to use the city buses or take the regional trains to one of the many other Hanau train stations.
To date, only the S-Bahn platform is barrier-free accessible via an elevator, all other platforms can only be reached via stairs and thus an insurmountable obstacle for wheelchair users. The south side (trains towards Würzburg) will be made barrier-free by 2022, the north side (trains towards Fulda) will remain Rolli Desert until further notice.

- 2 Hanau West train station, Philippsruher Allee 24, 63457 Hanau. Hanau West station was historically Hanau's first station and is centrally located within walking distance of the city center. In recent years, the area around the Westbahnhof has been rebuilt in order to make the station more attractive for travelers and to improve the transfer routes to city bus traffic; nonetheless, the station serves mainly as a sleeping place for the homeless. Only regional trains stop at the station, Regional Express trains rush through without stopping.
- 3 Hanau Nord train station, Friedberger Str. 1, 63452 Hanau, Germany. Only regional trains from the direction of Friedberg stop at Hanau Nord station. Despite being embedded in a settlement with representative Wilhelminian-style buildings, the station itself is pretty shabby and hardly invites you to linger. The bus stops for changing to urban bus transport are quite far away and only something for sporty bus travelers.
- 4 Hanau-Wilhelmsbad train station, Burgallee 127, 63454 Hanau, Germany. The Hanau-Wilhelmsbad train station is actually a sight of its own. It was built in 1848 as a representative train station for the electors of Hessen-Kassel on Burgallee, the artificial line of sight from Philippsruhe Palace to the Wilhelmsbad spa park, with splendid furnishings and its own prince's room. Today, the station building is used gastronomically by changing tenants. In terms of traffic, the importance of the train station is relatively minor because the train station is quite remote; also only regional trains stop here.
By bus
On the forecourt of the main train station there is not only the stop for the regional bus lines but also the long-distance bus stop for Hanau. However, this is pretty orphaned: currently (as of June 2017) there is only one connection from Berlin (with stops in Jena and Erfurt, among others) to Hanau.
In the street
Hanau is conveniently located at the intersection of various motorways. South leads the 
over with the connection point

runs as a city motorway through Hanau and connects all these motorways with each other, but this street also regularly suffers from traffic jams. If you come from the north or east, it is better to take the connection point 37 Erlensee and drive into Hanau via the well-developed bypass road.

By boat
Unusual, but at least possible, is the journey with the ship passages of the Primus Line on the Main, which take place regularly in summer. There are a total of three landing stages in Hanau: directly below Philippsruhe Castle, in Steinheim am Main halfway between the train station and the old town and in Großauheim directly below the old town.
If you arrive with your own boat, you will find guest berths at 5 Hanau boat club.

Public transport
The public transport in Hanau is operated by the Hanauer Straßenbahn AG operated that, contrary to their name, operate a pure bus network. With the urban redevelopment, the entire bus network was restructured and revised in order to make it clearer and clearer, especially for visitors. Since then there have been 11 urban bus routes that are numbered from 1 to 12 (line 3 was later deleted).
The central hub for urban and regional bus transport is the 6 Freedom Square in the city center, which has a modern passenger information system after the renovation. However, the public transport network is structured in such a way that all major destinations and districts in Hanau can be reached from the main train station without having to change trains.
A separate tariff applies to all trips within Hanau and to Bruchköbel, which is cheaper than the regular RMV tariff. Journeys to and from other destinations are normally billed according to the RMV tariff.
Park
A new, highly recommended parking garage has been available for a few years: it is the only parking garage that Hanau visitors should even consider:
- 7 Parking garage Gloria Palais, At Steinheimer Tor 1a. Located right next to the Westbahnhof, generously sized parking spaces, extremely cheap. Hanau city center is within walking distance (around 500 m) or you can take the city bus. Important: Access is only possible from the south (Am Steinheimer Tor / Friedrich-Ebert-Anlage), the route from the north (Nussallee) is not signposted and for those unfamiliar with the area it is hardly to be found (you have to turn towards Kesselstadt and go straight through the roundabout so that you can then turn right into the parking garage).Price: Mon-Sat € 1 per hour, Sun € 0.50 per hour, maximum € 15 per day.

- 8 Parking garage Congress Park / swimming pool, Eugen-Kaiser-Strasse 17b. Located right next to the swimming pool. Fairly modern with wide parking spaces. As a long-term parker, you can get away cheaper here. The city center is within walking distance, with the city bus you are much slower because you book a round tour through half of Hanau.Price: € 0.50 per 30 minutes, night charge € 2, maximum € 12 (Mon-Fri) / € 10 (Sat) / € 7 (Sun) per day.
We strongly advise against using the municipal parking garages in the city center (Nürnberger Straße and Am Forum): it exists Risk of accident by ramps that are so narrow that you inevitably get severe scratches or even a crack in the rim if you drive in with a vehicle that is even reasonably wide or long. The only private parking garage at the City Center can only be described as "modern highway robbery" (€ 1.70 per 30 minutes, is not announced on the website). The parking spaces on the street are all short-term parking zones with the exception of the parking lot at Rühlstraße 6 (but there is a parking lot there, so to speak, a six in the lottery)
Bargain hunters can try their luck in the more distant residential areas, e.g. B. Freigerichtstraße or the Lamboyviertel along Karl-Marx-Straße / August-Schärttner-Straße (from there the Kinzigbrücke leads directly into the city center as a footpath). These parking options are currently (as of June 2017) free of charge and unlimited in time. The park-and-ride facilities are now all chargeable and therefore no longer recommended.
bicycle
There is one at the main train station Call-a-Bike-Station. However, the climate in Hanau is pretty rough for cyclists: The ADFC only gives Hanau a grade of 4.1 and thus 69th place out of 106 (as of 2018). Although the sidewalks are cleared for cyclists in many streets with a lot more traffic, the cycle paths are sometimes very narrow or you are confronted with obstacles such as stop signs. The pedestrian zone is now largely closed to cyclists, the cyclists are sent via the route of the city buses. The road between Freiheitsplatz and Marktplatz is only secured by a public transport traffic light, which does not apply to cyclists and is therefore a nasty death trap. One-way streets for cyclists are not available everywhere and especially not in the city center. In Hanau, bicycle parking means: connect to the nearest lamp post - there are generally bike racks or similar in Hanau Not.
Directions for cyclists are distributed in homeopathic doses, mostly on the outskirts in the direction of neighboring communities. These signposts may be helpful for longer bike rides and perhaps for commuters, but they are useless for the tourist who wants to see the city. In the city you look for such signposts in vain and you can meander through the streets yourself to (hopefully) find your destination. Only a few old signposts can still be found as remnants of the 2002 State Horticultural Show.
Taking bicycles on buses and trains is free in Hanau as in the entire RMV area, but there is no guarantee that you will be taken by bike at peak times.
Taxis and rental cars
Taxis are always located at Freiheitsplatz and at the main train station. In other places you can order a taxi by phone, the central taxi call is 24111.
If the public transport does not offer you enough mobility or you are planning trips to the Kinzigtal (where public transport deteriorates rapidly the further you drive from Hanau), you can also rent a rental car in Hanau. All well-known rental car providers have a branch in Hanau, but they are a bit scattered around the city and sometimes not easy to find.
Tourist Attractions
The city of Hanau offers several guides at:
- A Tourist train drives regularly through the city and provides information about the most important sights. Wed, Fri and Sat there are short trips of 15 minutes each, so the long tour with 40 minutes. The offer is most likely to be suitable for families with children.
- "Traditional" tours are offered on regular dates with different focuses, it is best to study the Guide calendar of the city of Hanau. A pre-registration is neccessary.
- In addition, there is also the option of booking individual tours with the city, especially for tour groups.
Churches
- 1 Marienkirche. Oldest and largest Protestant church in Hanau. It was built in its current form in the Middle Ages, in 1446 by Count Reinhard II of Hanau, and then, in addition to its function as a place of worship, served as a burial place for many members of the Hanau aristocratic family. Although the church was badly damaged in World War II, it was able to be restored according to the historical model.
- 2 Johanneskirche, Johanneskirchplatz 1. The Johanneskirche was built in 1658 as a Lutheran church next to the Reformed Marienkirche. Between 1727 and 1729 it was extended to the side and thus became a transverse church. After the unification of the Lutheran and Reformed congregations in Hanau, the Johanneskirche supplied the western part of Hanau, while the Marienkirche supplied the eastern part. In the Second World War, the church was destroyed except for the surrounding walls. During the reconstruction, in which the lateral extension was abandoned and the original building from 1658 was restored, it was decided not to continue to use the building as a church, but to build a new church for this purpose, the New St. John's Church on the outskirts in the modern style . For this reason, the Johanneskirche initially did not get its wooden dome back, until a metal frame was placed on the church tower as a memorial in 2002.
- 3 Walloon-Dutch double church, French avenue 12. In the center of the Französische Allee, the southernmost square of the Hanauer Neustadt, is the Walloon-Dutch double church, which served as a house of prayer for the Calvinist refugees. After the Second World War, only the Dutch half was rebuilt, the outer walls of the Walloon half remained as a memorial. In front of the ruins is the bronze bust of Count Philipp Ludwig II of Hanau. The rest of the space served as a parking lot for a long time, but is currently being converted into a park. The Walloon-Dutch congregation still exists today and, besides the large regional churches, is the only other recognized Protestant church in Germany. The church building is still used as an advice center and for occasional events.
- 4 Mariae names, Dean-Theodor-Weidner-Platz 1. Today only the name reminds of the formerly splendid Catholic church in Hanau. Construction work on the church began in 1842 on the site of the former orchard of the Counts of Hanau. Originally the church was supposed to be a large, three-aisled basilica, but after a storm in 1848 destroyed the half-finished church, it was decided to buy a cheaper hall church. In the Second World War, the church suffered severe damage and was then only rebuilt in a very simplified form. In the southeast corner, part of the stripe pattern of the old church can still be seen.
- The 5 Friedenskirche. is the most important landmark of the formerly independent city of Kesselstadt due to its location directly on the banks of the Main. This church in neo-Gothic style was built in 1904 as a replacement for a medieval church that no longer met the requirements. The church survived the Second World War almost undamaged, only the windows burst.
Castles and Palaces
- The 6 Office building and the 7 Stables are the last surviving buildings of the Hanau City Palace. This was built in the 13th century as a moated castle and initially served the Counts of Hanau as their seat. In modern times, there were several plans to expand the castle into a contemporary residence, but all of them failed: Count Philip Ludwig II's plans were due to him early death and the subsequent Thirty Years War thwarted, and later, due to the construction of Philippsruhe Palace, the Counts had little interest in the city palace. The current chancellery was built between 1685 and 1691, followed by the royal stables in 1713. In 1829/30, Elector Wilhelm II of Hessen-Kassel had the medieval castle demolished to expand the palace gardens. After the Electorate of Hesse was annexed by Prussia, the city palace was no longer needed as a residence and served other purposes; the stables were converted into the town hall of Hanau, and a museum and various authorities moved in. During the Second World War the castle was destroyed and after the war it was completely demolished with the exception of the buildings that still exist today; the areas were used for the construction of a new grammar school and the expansion of the town hall.
- The most famous landmark of Hanau is 8 Philippsruhe Castle. The castle was built in the early 18th century by Count Philipp Reinhard von Hanau-Münzenberg as a baroque residence. The subsequent rulers rebuilt the castle according to personal preferences, most recently by Friedrich Wilhelm von Hessen-Rumpenheim in the years 1875 to 1880. The castle remained completely undamaged in the Second World War and thus served as the provisional town hall of Hanau in the post-war period. On August 7, 1984, a fire destroyed the historic dome and numerous works of art inside the palace, which have since been irretrievably lost. Since the Hanau Historical Museum is housed in Schloss Philippsruhe (see there), the castle can also be viewed from the inside. The palace garden behind Philippsruhe Palace has been home to several sculptures by renowned artists for several years.
Buildings
- The 9 Neustadt town hall was the historic town hall of Hanauer Neustadt and still serves as the town hall of Hanau today. It was created in the years 1725-1733 under Count Johann Reinhard III. and fitted into the row of houses on the market square at that time. After the destruction in the Second World War, the town hall was rebuilt, but now stands alone with a modern extension at the rear. Due to the considerable need for renovation, the building is currently (as of June 2017) closed except for the ground floor, the city council also has to move to the town hall.
- The 10 Authority building is the only historically preserved building on Freiheitsplatz. It was built in 1768 under the then Hereditary Prince Wilhelm IX. von Hessen-Kassel and housed all the authorities of the then County of Hanau, but served inter alia for a time. also as barracks. After the Second World War, the administrative building was rebuilt and continues to serve as the seat of the authorities, more precisely the Hanau tax office.
- The 11 Frankfurter Tor is one of the few surviving baroque city gates in Germany. Count Johann Reinhard III. von Hanau had the Frankfurter Tor built at this point in 1722 as a replacement for an older city gate; it was intended to serve as a representative portal from and to the Free City of Frankfurt. During the Napoleonic era, the gate only escaped demolition because there were apartments in it, and after it was destroyed in World War II, the gate was restored to its original state. The interiors are used by the neighboring hospital and are therefore not open to the public.
Monuments
- The 12 Brothers Grimm National Monument on the market square shows the larger than life image of the Brothers Grimm (Jacob standing, Wilhelm sitting). This bronze memorial was one of the few buildings in Hanauer Neustadt to survive the Second World War absolutely unscathed.
- The 13 Well of Justice with a figure of the Justizia was built by Count Philipp Ludwig II in 1611 on the old town market. In the 18th century it was removed from the square because it stood in the way of military parades; so the fountain survived the Second World War and was then put back on the square.
- The 1 Ghetto wall is the last remaining remnant of the former Hanau ghetto in Judengasse (today Nordstraße). Today there is a memorial plaque on the wall for the Jews from Hanau who were killed under National Socialism.
Streets and squares
The arrangement of Hanau's old and new town in different squares from north to south can still be seen in the cityscape today. The squares themselves are of little tourist interest these days, unless you have a particular interest in functional buildings from the 1950s.
Kurpark Wilhelmsbad
The 14 Kurpark Wilhelmsbad was created in the 18th century by the Counts of Hanau, who suspected a healing spring here and then built a spacious swimming pool and park. However, it quickly became apparent that the water bubbling here had no healing power at all, and the spring dried up again after a few years, so that the bathing facility had to be closed. Instead, the facility served, and continues to serve, as a local recreation area for the Hanau citizens with numerous original structures from the time of the spa operation.
In one of the spa buildings there is an information center that offers the visitor further information about the Wilhelmsbad spa park. This can be found in the other spa buildings Comoedienhaus and the Hessian doll museum (see the respective sections).
Further sights on the grounds of the spa park are:
- The 15 Lustschlösschen Wilhelmsbad is an artificial castle ruin on an island in the spa park, in which the private rooms of the Hereditary Prince Wilhelm IX. are located. These can be viewed today as part of a guided tour, information on this is available in the information center. The tour currently costs 4 €.
- The 16 Pyramid Wilhelmsbad in the immediate vicinity was built in honor of Wilhelm IX's eldest son, who died at the age of 12. The pyramid contained a marble urn, which was stolen in the 1980s, and the theft has never been resolved to this day.
- The 1 Historic Wilhelmsbad carousel was for a long time the main attraction of the Wilhelmsbad spa park. After being damaged in World War II, the carousel was out of order for years and could only be viewed from the outside. After many years of efforts and financial support, it was finally possible to repair the carousel, and so it has been in operation again at irregular intervals since 2016 and can be used. Museums
The city of Hanau offers numerous museums with different focuses. The earlier offer of season tickets has (unfortunately) been canceled, so that you have to pay separate admission for each museum. Only the annual ticket for one of the city's museums (Historisches Museum Hanau, Museum Schloss Steinheim, Museum Großauheim) allows free entry to the other city museums. The highlight are several functioning steam engines that are demonstrated on special occasions. Klein-Auheim was once an important center of the bicycle industry; The Bauer brand in particular is well known among connoisseurs. The home and history association Klein-Auheim not only presents the history of the village of Klein-Auheim in its exhibition, but also shows the largest preserved collection of Bauer bicycles. Numerous animals from the local forests such as deer, wild boar, but also wolves, lynx and other rare species are shown here. A special highlight is a regular bird of prey air show. In the wildlife park there is also the Hessian Forest Museum with a lot of information about the forest and the forest professions. For younger guests there is also a petting zoo and the possibility of feeding the animals with animal feed from the cash register. Behind the former Hanau City Palace, Landgravine Maria von Hessen-Kassel laid out it in the years 1760 to 1764 based on experiences from her native England, making it one of the oldest English gardens on the European mainland. The stock of numerous very old trees as well as some works of art and monuments are particularly worth seeing. In the northeast corner there is a large children's playground for little travelers.
- 27 Hanau main cemetery, Birkenhainer Strasse 2. The main cemetery was built in 1846, well before the gates of the then city, as a replacement for two older cemeteries that were located in the floodplain of the Kinzig and no longer met the increased hygienic requirements of the time. Der Hauptfriedhof wurde im Laufe der Zeit dreimal nach Osten erweitert und erhielt im Zweiten Weltkrieg schwere Schäden, aber dennoch existieren hier zahlreiche historische und sehenswerte Grabmäler von bedeutenden Personen der Hanauer Geschichte.

- Hanauer Märchenpfad: Im Frühling 2016 wurden elf Skulpturen von Märchen aus der Maingegend aus der Sammlung Kinder- und Hausmärchen der Brüder Jacob und Wilhelm Grimm in der Hanauer Innenstadt zwischen Schlosspark und Französischer Allee, als Ergebnis eines Bildhauerwettbewerbs, installiert. An der Ausschreibung nahmen 74 Künstlerinnen und Künstler mit 170 Einsendungen teil. Zusammen mit weiteren siebzehn Grimm-Erinnerungsorten, u.a. einstigen Geburts- und Wohnhäuser der Familie Grimm, bilden sie den Hanauer Märchenpfad.[1]

- Hanau eignet sich sehr gut zum hike:
- The Grüne Ring führt auf einer Länge von 60 km um die Stadt Hanau herum, größtenteils durch Wald- und Naturschutzgebiete. Der Weg ist aufgrund seiner Länge auch zum Radfahren gut geeignet, er führt größtenteils über gut ausgebaute Straßen.
- Östlich von Hanau schließt sich mit dem Bulau-Wald ein beliebtes und naturbelassenes Naherholungsgebiet an. In der Nähe des Hessischen Forstamtes befindet sich ein 9 Waldparkplatz Wolfgang, von hier sind mehrere Rundwanderwege des Spessartbundes ausgeschildert. Wer die Kinzig mit ihrem naturbelassenen Flussbett sehen will, kann sein Auto auf einem unbefestigten 10 Waldparkplatz Lamboy im Lamboyviertel abstellen.

- Badeseen gibt es in Hanau keine mehr. Der lange als Badesee genutzte Birkensee musste wegen der schlechten Wasserqualität geschlossen werden. Hier muss man auf Badeseen in der Umgebung ausweichen.
- 3 Bootsverleih Hanau, Philippsruher Allee (unter der Hellerbrücke). Tel.: 49 6101 1011. Der Bootsverleih ist relativ gut versteckt, aber wer ihn findet, kann für ein geringes Entgelt Kanus, Tretboote und Motorboote ausleihen und damit auf Kinzig und Main fahren.Geöffnet: Mo-Sa 14:00-18:00, So 10:00-19:00.

- The Brüder-Grimm-Märchenfestspiele finden jedes Jahr im hierfür errichteten 7 Amphitheater Hanau neben dem Schlosspark Philippsruhe statt.
- The Lamboyfest erinnert an die Belagerung der Stadt Hanau im Dreißigjährigen Krieg und findet jährlich in der Hanauer Altstadt statt.
- The Bürgerfest findet immer im Herbst auf den Mainwiesen bei Schloss Philippsruhe statt.
- The Herbstmarkt am 1. Sonntag im November fasst mehrere Märkte zusammen: den Deutsch-Holländischen Stoff- und Tuchmarkt, der an die Zeit der Gründung der Hanauer Neustadt anknüpft, den Streetfood-Markt und den Antik- und Trödelmarkt. Die Veranstaltungsorte sind über die gesamte Alt- und Neustadt verteilt, es gibt auch noch einen Markt am Amphitheater.
- The Hanauer Weihnachtsmarkt auf dem Marktplatz (Freitag vor dem 1. Advent bis zum 4. Advent) ist auch über die Stadtgrenzen hinaus bekannt. Jedes Jahr verwandelt sich das Rathaus in einen riesigen Adventskalender in dem sich immer um 18:00 ein Türchen mit den Motiven aus der Märchenwelt der Gebrüder Grimm öffnet.

- 1 Forum Hanau, Am Freiheitsplatz 18 63450 Hanau. Mit dem im September 2015 neu eröffneten Forum Hanau hat sich die Stadt Hanau ihren Traum vom Einkaufs-Mekka erfüllt. Auf drei Stockwerken gibt es alle großen Marken, aber auch sehr viele kleinere Geschäfte, die teilweise den alteingesessenen Läden in der Stadt erhebliche Konkurrenz machen. Hinweis: im Forum Hanau, besonders im Untergeschoss, gibt es keinen Handyempfang!Geöffnet: Mo-Sa 09:30-20:00.
Neben dem Forum Hanau findet der Einkauf hauptsächlich in der direkt anschließenden Fußgängerzone statt, die sich bis zum Marktplatz und die angrenzenden Straßen erstreckt. Durch die Fußgängerzone fahren teilweise auch die Stadtbusse und die nehmen keine Rücksicht auf bummelnde Passanten und nieten gnadenlos jeden um, der sich ihnen in den Weg stellt.

Auf dem Marktplatz findet jeden Mittwoch- und Samstagmorgen von 6 bis 14 Uhr der 3 Hanauer Wochenmarkt instead of. Es handelt sich um einen der größten Wochenmärkte Hessens mit einem breiten Sortiment an frischen landwirtschaftlichen Erzeugnissen der Region. Bei Veranstaltungen auf dem Marktplatz (insbesondere während des Weihnachtsmarkts) zieht der Wochenmarkt auf die südlich gelegene Französische Allee um.
Wer ein Schnäppchen sucht, sollte vielleicht den Flohmarkt besuchen; der findet jeden ersten Sonntag im Monat auf dem Parkplatz des IKEA-Marktes in Hanau statt.

Alle Gerichte die für Frankfurt typisch sind, sind auch in Hanau zu haben. Allerdings ist es in Hanau selbst ziemlich schwer noch richtige deutsche Restaurants zu finden. Die versammeln sich hauptsächlich in den Vororten und an der Stadtgrenze, während in der Innenstadt verschiedenste Einwanderergruppen diesen Markt erobert haben.

Hanau ist kein Ort zum Feiern gehen. Die Bars und Kneipen in Hanau folgen einem standardisierten Schema: sie verlangen Frankfurter Preise, bieten aber keine Frankfurter Qualität. Aus diesem Grund empfiehlt es sich, gleich nach Frankfurt zu fahren; dank der inzwischen rund um die Uhr fahrenden S-Bahn ist das auch kein verkehrliches Problem mehr.
Allerdings gibt es in Hanau durchaus ein erwähnenswertes Angebot für Kulturliebhaber. Wer the sucht, kann auch in Hanau glücklich werden.

Das Angebot an Übernachtungsmöglichkeiten in Hanau ist reichhaltig, was daran liegt dass Hanau häufig Ausweichoption für Messebesucher ist die in Frankfurt kein Hotelzimmer mehr finden konnten. Deshalb gilt, dass man es eigentlich vergessen kann, in Hanau ein Hotelzimmer zu finden, wenn in Frankfurt gerade Messe ist.

In jüngerer Zeit erregten zahlreiche Massenschlägereien zu später Stunde auf dem Freiheitsplatz großes Aufsehen in der regionalen Presse. Deshalb ist von einem Aufenthalt auf dem Freiheitsplatz abends und nachts abzuraten. Falls es wirklich nicht anders geht, sollte man Menschenansammlungen und sichtlich alkoholisierten Personen so weit wie möglich aus dem Weg gehen. Auch den Westbahnhof sollte man abends und nachts meiden, da das ein bekannter Treffpunkt der Drogenszene ist.
Ansonsten gelten die allgemeinen Sicherheitshinweise, also keine Wertsachen im Auto lassen und Taschen möglichst eng bei sich tragen.

Städtisches Krankenhaus mit allen wichtigen Abteilungen, hat allerdings wegen organisatorischer Mängel schlechte Bewertungen (Wartezeit in der Notaufnahme kann auch mal 10 Stunden oder länger beantragen, auf Arztbriefe wartet man gut und gerne ein halbes Jahr.).
