Route description with sights

Corner points of the route

  • Worms - The cycle path begins at the old Rhine bridge on the Hessian side.
→ The signposted route leads north of the railway along the busy B 47 on an asphalt forest road (lots of traffic noise). From Bürstadt it is much nicer to use the zoo lane in the reed forests away from the exhaust fumes and traffic noise (easy to drive, gravel forest path south of the B 47).
→ Drive over asphalt farm roads along the railway line to Bensheim. If you want, you can deviate from the route and visit the Bergstrasse nature conservation center at the "Erlache" quarry pond. An exhibition on the flora and fauna of the region will be shown (free access - see opening times Side of the center).
In Heppenheim, a detour from the R 9 to the pretty market square with the half-timbered town hall is worthwhile
  • Bensheim - Old town with a cozy pedestrian zone
→ Ride on the road-lined cycle path along the B 3 along Bergstrasse
  • Heppenheim (100 m) - very interesting half-timbered old town. You should definitely visit the market square with its half-timbered town hall and Liebigapotheke.
→ Drive steadily uphill via Unter-Hambach and Ober-Hambach (gradients of up to about 13% on a small paved side road to Oberschannbach am Krehberg; highest point on the route here at 539 m altitude).
  • Schannenbach am Krehberg - small hamlet on the heights. Incidentally, the Krehberg is of no touristic interest, as there is no panoramic view from the mountain top (only the transmission tower). The most beautiful, but not spectacular, valley view is already from the route of the R 4 at the entrance to Oberschannenbach.
→ Descent via side roads and asphalt farm roads up to the B 47 near Kolmbach
→ Between Kolmbach and Winterkasten, a very steep pass must be overcome on asphalt farm roads (inclines and declines of around 12 to 15% in places)
  • Hessian-Bavarian border, continuation as Mümling cycle path (R1)

trips

Von Breuberg has existed since Highest in the Odenwald concurrent Mümling cycle path (R1) Connection to the Main cycle path. The Mümling cycle path continues Obernburg am Main (South from Aschaffenburg). In Höchst there is a connection to the Hessian long-distance cycle route R4 to Mühlheim am Main between Offenbach and Hanau.

Both cycle paths follow from Höchst in a southerly direction Hirschhorn (Neckar) to the Neckar valley cycle path.

Almost all of the cycling route map is available on the R 9 (to Höchst in the Odenwald an der Mümling). In addition, the entire Bergstrasse and the entire Rhine-Neckar area can be found on the map (Sheet cut of the map - unfortunately quite small).
