background
The history of Peenemünde is closely linked to the military. This dominated the region until the closure of the restricted area in 1990.
Peenemünde in the Third Reich
With the start of the construction work for the Peenemünde Research Station in 1936, a time began that brought about both great technical innovations and, as a result, great suffering.
Cornerstones
In 1936 the construction of the "Peenemünde Research Center" began. The aim was to continue the development and manufacture of long-range missiles. In 1938 the air force test site "Peenemünde-West" was added. Under Wernher von Braun succeeded in 1942 the first launch of a long-range rocket in Peenemünde. In 1943 several hundred British bombers tried to destroy Peenmünde, and as a result of this attack, rocket production was relocated to a bomb-proof, underground factory in northern Thuringia. in the Dora-Mittelbau at Nordhausen the V1 and V2 rockets were built in series from now on.
Balance V1 and V2
Around 20,000 forced laborers and concentration camp inmates died during the production of the rockets in Dora-Mittelbau. Approximately 22,000 V 1 and 3,000 V 2 were shot west (to France, Belgium and England). Remote weapon attacks killed around 8,000 people in London alone. (See also the number of victims here)
The legacy of Peenemünde
The under w: Wernher von Braun The basics for rocket technology developed in Peenemünde formed the foundation for today's civil space travel. But they also made the arms race in the cold war possible. The Museum Peenemünde - Historical-Technical Information Center tries to come to terms with the difficult topic.
