Info

History

Pitcairn was discovered in 1767 and named after the sailor who first spotted it: Robert Pitcairn. In 1790 a group of mutineers landed there with the ship Bounty. Together with some Tahitians, they hid here from the British government for eighteen years. When the American ship Topaz reached the island in 1808, it turned out that only one mutineer (John Adams) was still alive, as well as a number of women and children. The only village on the island, Adamstown, is named after him.

Holidays

Arrive

This is one of the most remote and isolated places in the world and so it is difficult to reach the islands. A trip to the Pitcairn Islands can easily take five days.

Passport & visa info

By plane/boat

Traveling to the Pitcairn Islands is a huge undertaking. You have to fly halfway across the world from the Netherlands and Belgium. However, the Pitcairn Islands themselves do not have an airport. You fly with a number of transfers to mangareva, the main island of the Gambier Islands in French Polynesia.

Once there at Mangareva you have to continue by boat. The only regular way for passenger transport is by ship MV Claymore II. This freighter sails eight times a year to supply the Pitcairn Islands and can accommodate 12 passengers, each with their own room. This boat trip also takes another three days before finally arriving at the Pitcairn Islands.
