Pozzilli is a center of the Molise.
To know
It is of great importance at the provincial level thanks to the presence in its municipal territory of most of the factories of the industrial core of Venafro-Pozzilli.
Geographical notes
It is located in theMolise Apennines in the Volturno valley, between the Mainarde mountain range to the northeast and the Matese massif to the southeast, in an alluvial plateau of streams such as La Rava and Ravigone. The territory includes pine and oak forests, while the surrounding hills are covered with vineyards and olive groves. From the hills of Pozzilli you can clearly see Capriati a Volturno and Prata Sannita to the east and along the middle Volturno valley you can see to the southeast Sesto Campano, to the right, and further away, Vairano Patenora, to the left. It borders on Venafro to whose municipal territory it belonged for a long time. Until 1860 with Sesto Campano, Venafro is Conca Casale was part of Land of Work in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
Background
Until 1810 its history is part of that of Venafro of which Pozzilli was a hamlet. The remains found testify to human presence in prehistoric times. In the locality of Camerelle, near the railway level crossing, a Samnite necropolis was found in the seventies. In Roman times the territory was crossed by the Roman aqueduct of Venafro. At the end of the 18th century it was found there in the Triverno area Aquarium table, an epigraph dated to 26 BC. under Augustus, who reported the rules for the maintenance of the aqueduct and the distribution of its waters.
The municipal territory belonged to the Lombard Duchy of Benevento. The fraction of Santa Maria Oliveto it would have been founded in 839 by settlers from the area of Sulmona that were settled there by the abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno around a church dedicated to San Lorenzo. In Norman times in the locality of "Arcora", at the foot of Mount Stingone, east of the municipal capital, one of the small Benedictine settlements was built. marked the path between the great abbeys of Monte Cassino and of San Vincenzo al Volturno: there are preserved some arches of an ancient building that gave the place its name.
The municipal territory belonged in 1234 to the feudal lord Ruggiero Galluccio who was subsequently usurped by a certain Gualtiero D'Aversa. In the 16th century it was in the possession of the Pandone di Venafro family, and then passed to the Gaetani. In the seventeenth century its name entered history as a papal bull of Innocent X of 1646 wrote of Pozzilli ("Li pozzilli"). In 1811 the district of Piedimonte d'Alife was established, into which the district of Venafro fell. and the territory of Colli detached from the district of Sora. Up to this date Pozzilli was a fraction of the municipality of Venafro (which was also the district seat) together with Filignano, Conca Casale, Ceppagna is Sesto Campano (Venafro and reunited). With the Garibaldi occupation and the annexation to the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1860 the district of Piedimonte and the district of Venafro were suppressed.
Santa Maria Oliveto instead was in its own right, "possession" of Monte Cassino, and passed to the municipality of Pozzilli as a fraction only shortly before the unification of Italy with the royal decree of Ferdinand II of Naples, King of the Two Sicilies.
During the Second World War, between the autumn of 1943 and the spring of 1944, the territory of Pozzilli was the scene of fierce fighting between the Germans barricaded on the mountains north-west of the Volturno river and the Allies deployed to the south-east, along the left bank of the river, suffering damage in particular from German reprisals. After the post-war reconstruction, in the sixties and seventies it suffered a significant decrease in population due to emigration abroad and in Northern Italy. The phenomenon has reversed since the 1980s following the installation of industries in the area ("Industrial nucleus of Pozzilli and Venafro", which includes, among others, a non-food branch of Unilever and Lavazza) or a short distance away (Cassino) . In the spring of 1984 it suffered damage from the earthquake with its epicenter in the Comino Valley (FR).
Since 1994, together with other 338 partners, he has been part ofNational Association of Oil Cities.

How to get around
What see
- Medieval village of Santa Maria Oliveto. This village is of very ancient origins and its construction dates back to around the year one thousand. As evidence of this, it is possible to note how the ancient village is surrounded by walls and thirteen defensive towers. Even today what remains of the small castle is visible and to the east there is the small city gate called "Portella" by the inhabitants. In the locality of Santa Lucia there are still remains of the Augustan aqueduct that from the sources of the Volturno near Rocchetta channeled the water for Venafro. Inside the village in piazza Seggio there is the small church of San Lorenzo Martire, patron saint of the town. In the church it is possible to visit the medieval apse representing the twelve apostles with Jesus, some frescoes of little value and the precious wooden statue of San Lorenzo made from walnut wood.
- 1 Parish Church of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria. The church was built in the 14th century but remodeled in the 16th. The baroque facade is in pink plaster with some frames. The small bell tower is a tower. The interior with a single nave preserves a precious canvas depicting the mystical wedding of Saint Catherine, painted from the 16th century: a saint is placed on the left and receives a laurel wreath from the enthroned Madonna.
