Racines (Ratschings in German) is a center of the Trentino Alto Adige.

To know

It is part of the Pearls of the Alps , a grouping of 25 Alpine resorts located in six different countries.

Geographical notes

The municipality extends into the Racines valley and the Ridanna valley, crossed by the river of the same name. A large ski resort is located just upstream of the village on the north side of the valley.

Background

The municipality of Racines was born in 1929 from the merger of the municipalities of Mareta, Ridanna, Telves, Val Giovo and Racines. The toponym is attested as Rasine in 1050-1070 and probably has a pre-Roman origin, but a derivation from the Latin runcare ("tilling the land") has also been proposed. After the annexation of the Trentino Alto Adige to Italy in 1919 until 1923 it was called Racìgnes.

What see

Side view of Wolfsthurn Castle
  • 1 Wolfsthurn Castle (in the hamlet of Mareta). It is a baroque style castle located on a hill above Mareta (Mareit); has 365 windows.
Its origins are obscure. After 1200 in place of the castle there was a defensive tower, which the Counts of Tyrol acquired in 1242 and gave to Rudolfus Lupus as a fief. The name of the castle also derives from Lupus-Wolf, in fact Wolf in German means "wolf". In 1574 the property passed to the Grebmer family and about 200 years later to the Sternbach family of Brunico, to which the castle still belongs today. Between 1727 and 1741 Franz Andreas von Sternbach transformed the castle into the only baroque-style castle in the whole of Tyrol.
The rooms on the second floor are dedicated to the history of the castle itself. The opulent rooms are kept in their original state. The environment reflects the baroque atmosphere of the nobility of the 18th and 19th centuries.
The castle is connected to the town via the “Bosco e acqua” path, a one kilometer long walk.
Since 1996 on the first floor of the building is located the Provincial Museum of Hunting and Fishing. The museum exhibition emphasizes historical-cultural aspects and folk art. It provides historical and cultural information on game, hunting and fishing.
The castle is open to the public, guided tours by appointment.
  • Provincial Museum of Mines.
The sites are also of naturalistic and environmental interest:
The Stanghe waterfalls
  • Stanghe waterfalls (Gilfenklamm). They are located between the Ridanna Valley and the Racines Valley; fascinatingly through the small Stanghe gorge, also known as the Gilf ravine (Gilfenschlucht).
At the beginning, the Racines stream was nothing more than a small stream, but over time, it began to dig underground paths, digging deeply into the white marble, until it became an impetuous stream. Over the years, however, also thanks to bad weather, the upper part of the gorge has blackened, presenting green reflections.
The dizzying gorge is now considered a natural monument, and can be visited in the hottest seasons (ie from May onwards), paying a small symbolic amount, in about an hour, facing a drop of 175 meters.
The origin of the name of the ravine ("Gilfenklamm") originates in the ancient Latin term "colphus" (or from the Greek "Kolphos"), which can be translated into bosom, inlet, which has come to the present day from the Roman term "golfu ".
It appears that one of the first explorations of the gorge was carried out in the years 1893-1895, and were opened to the public on August 2, 1896. The official inauguration instead took place on July 25, 1898, but changing its name to "Ravine of the Emperor Franz Joseph. ".
In 1961 the landscaping association carried out restoration and reopening of the promenade.
  • Racines Valley. It is a small valley that starts from Racines up to the Vallettina-Flading locality. It is renowned for the presence of ski resorts that occupy a large part of the side of the mountain, reaching as far as the Giovo pass. It is also full of hiking trails.
The mineral deposit
  • Val Ridanna (Ridnauntal). It is a small 18 long valley that starts from Sterzing up to the Masseria locality. It is known for the presence of the Wolfsthurn Castle at Mareta and for the Provincial Mining Museum, set up at Masseria, even if historically the area actually exploited was between the Lazzago valley and the village of San Martino a Monteneve (2,385 m). Near the museum is the chapel of the miners of Santa Maddalena in Ridanna.
The Ridanna-Monteneve mineral deposit, attested since 1237 as Sneberch (today Schneeberg) and around 1500 owned by the Fuggers of Augusta with over 1000 miners, it is one of the highest in Europe (between 2,000 and 2,500 m asl) and the longest productive of the Alps (silver was mined as early as the end of the 12th century). The numerous mining plants inside and outside the mountain, which rises between the Ridnaun Valley and the Passiria Valley, are almost all intact. The underground didactic mine of Masseria gives an idea of the hard life of the miners, with the possibility of making an excursion underground in the disused tunnels.
  • Church of the miners Santa Maddalena.
