Geographical notes

Rovato is located in the southern part of Franciacorta, at the foot of the Monte Orfano.

Background

The first settlements on the hills of Franciacorta that surround the city date back to the first millennium BC .. More certain settlements are those of the Cenomanian Gauls who settled in the area in the 6th century BC. Remains of these settlements have been found on the Monte Orfano, on which, according to a legend, a small temple dedicated to the sun god was built.

After the expulsion of the Cenomane population by the Romans in the first century BC, Franciacorta grew in importance and developed around the castrum of Rovato.

With the fall of the Roman Empire, Rovato suffered a series of raids that ended in 568 AD. with the arrival of the Lombards. These, who converted to Christianity, restructured the Roman fortification present in the current area convent of the SS. Announced making Rovato the institutional center of ancient Franciacorta and building a church on Monte Orfano dedicated to San Michele, the warrior angel patron of the Lombards.
