Geographical notes

In theRomagna Apennines Cesenate, in the Savio valley, is 35 km from Cesena and 50 from Forlì. It is part of the Tuscan Romagna, the Forlì-Cesena area which until 1923 belonged to Tuscany, and before the Unification to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

Background

The happy position in an Apennine area crossed by commercial roads determined the foundation and growth of Sarsina, which was an important center even before the Roman domination. Founded between the 6th and 4th centuries BC. from Umbrian populations, its development in the third century was such as to see it at the head of a vast area that extended over both the Apennine ridges. The 266 a. C. is the date of its conquest by the Romans, who made it a federated city and then a Municipium; in 250 there was born Tito Maccio Plauto, a great brilliant Latin playwright. Sarsina prospered until the fall of the Empire.

Devastated and sacked, it was the domain of the Ordelaffi, the Malatesta, the Venetians and the Papacy. The bishopric retained a certain importance, even if its decline was continuous. It was part of the Papal States until 1859, when it was united with Italy.

What see

San Vicinio
  • Cathedral Basilica (Sanctuary of San Vicinio). With a Romanesque structure dating back to the year 1000, remodeled several times, the Cathedral bears traces of the renovations on the facade highlighted by the different shades of the bricks. in the lower part of the facade the points of attack of a pronaos with five arches, of which it is not known whether it was actually built, or was only planned. Named after San Vicinio who was its first bishop, it carries his portrait in the mosaic of the lunette above the entrance. The interior of the co-cathedral (with Cesena) preserves traces of the demolished crypt and the ancient Romanesque floor. The left aisle houses the baptistery, the tomb of the last resident Bishop of Sarsina, the 17th century chapel of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary and that of the Blessed Sacrament. The right aisle has the chapel of San Vicinio with its relics, including the famous miraculous chain. The paintings in the chapel narrate the saint's miracles and are eighteenth-century works by Michele Valbonesi di Ranchio; the canvas placed on the altar of the chapel of the Saint depicts theApparition of the Virgin to San Vicinio hermit and it is a valuable work by Ippolito Scarsella from Ferrara, called Scarsellino, who was the greatest Este painter between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The church has a Latin cross plan, with three naves with columns and a trussed ceiling; the central nave has an apse. Some columns have late Byzantine capitals from the 10th century.
Of great interest is the ambo from the 12th century with the symbols of the four Evangelists sculpted. A 10th century marble bas-relief depicting Christ enthroned with the archangels Michael and Gabriel is placed at the foot of the main altar. The canvases that decorate the church are the work of local artists of the 17th and 18th centuries.
The church is the destination of continuous pilgrimages from all over Italy to receive the blessing with the San Vicinio chain, an iron collar that tradition traces back to the Saint, who would have particular thaumaturgical powers against demoniac or possessed by evil spirits or people suffering from psychic problems.
