Talk

The official language of Hungary is Hungarian, which, despite its linguistic kinship, is completely incomprehensible to Finns without studying. However, the basic vocabulary is quick to learn and the Hungarian spelling strictly follows the pronunciation of the language. However, a Finn accustomed to the one-letter-per-voice spelling may at first be confused by notations such as the letter pairs 'cs' and 'sz' and the abundant use of an accent expressing a long vowel.

The best understood foreign language is German, but young people in particular are also increasingly speaking English. However, coping with England is quite difficult in some places in Budapest as well.

Buy

Price level

In terms of price level, Hungary is somewhat cheaper than Finland. The food is affordable and the dishes in the restaurants are often nice for the price.

Eat

The cornerstone of Hungarian cuisine is pork, which is prepared in many ways, and the national spice is a certain pepper. Cattle and chicken are also eaten a lot. The best known traditional dish is the meat stew, which is widely available. Although in Finland we often only talk about goulash, in Hungary Goulash is a lighter soup and the Finnish version is mainly similar to meat stew roasted. The raw material used is also foie gras (goose liver), which is relatively cheap in Hungary and therefore a popular gift.

Of the famous Hungarian peppers sold in stores, whites are mild and green are fiery.

Juo

Hungary has a wine culture and a variety of wines (in Hungarian bor) is available everywhere. Even small shops often have a wide selection of wines and usually a separate shelf containing kosher wines. The specialty is the famous Tokaji wines produced in Tokaj Province in the eastern part of the country. These are sweet white wines made from grapes raisined in precious molds that can be very valuable and definitely worth tasting. Beers (beer) are produced slightly, but are mostly imported, mainly from Austria. There are beer houses here and there in the cities (pub) and wine cellars (wine bar).

Throughout Hungary, you will come across bitter-tasting Unicum herbal liqueur and fruit spirits (brandy), the best known of which is apricot spirit produced in the Kecskemét region.
