Venzone is a municipality of the Friuli Venezia Giulia in the province of Udine.

To know

It is part of the most beautiful villages in Italy and was elected Borgo dei Borghi 2017. Since 1965 it has been a national monument.

Geographical notes

The town rises at the confluence of two important valleys: that of the Tagliamento, which leads to Carnia, and the Canal del Ferro. Part of the municipal territory is included in the Julian Prealps Natural Park. The town is linked by a very deep bond with the Alpine troops: this is in fact a land of traditional Alpine recruitment.

The woods and mountains around Venzone are rich in wildlife.

The protected area (10,000 ha) around Venzone (part of Julian Prealps Natural Park), is one of the very few areas of Italy where large carnivores live together (with the exception of the wolf still absent) once widespread on all Alps.

The Pelas lake is located in the Borgo San Giacomo hamlet.

Background

The name of Venzone is mentioned for the first time in 923 as Clausas de Albiciones; afterwards Albiciones will become Aventinone, Avenzon, Avenzone and therefore Venzone. The toponym certainly derives from av-au, flusslauf (source, watercourse) and the name certainly derives from the Venzonassa stream. However, the first official document in which the city of Venzone is mentioned is from 1001. It is a diploma of Emperor Otto III with which the herbatic of the Canal del Ferro was granted to the Patriarch of Aquileia, meaning a large area of great value covered with grass, contrary to the Friulian plain which in those times it counted almost exclusively woods and swamps. In 1258 Glizoio di Mels, who became lord of the place, started the construction of the fortifications: he managed to have a double wall surrounded by a deep moat in which the water of the stream flowed; the plant is hexagonal in shape with unequal sides. The walls, 8 meters high and 1.5 meters wide, were firmly anchored to a system of 15 towers.

In 1335 the fief of Venzone was ceded to Giovanni Enrico di Gorizia who was replaced by the Patriarch of Aquileia Bertrando di San Genesio, who the following year conquered the town and annexed it to the Patriarchate. In 1351 Venzone again passed as a fief to the Duke of Austria Albert II and in 1381 it finally became a free community with a voice in the Friulian parliament. In 1391 with papal bull of Pope Boniface IX it was named a parish. In 1420 under the doge Tommaso di Mocenigo it became part of the Friuli (excluding the Gorizia), of the Republic of Venice. In that period Venzone reached its maximum splendor and its inhabitants exceeded the number of 2000.

However, this was also the period in which its accelerated decay began by the incursions of the Turks. In the sixteenth century, when it became the seat of continuous royal stays, it was alternately invaded by the Germans and reconquered by the Venetians. In 1797 Venzone was occupied by French troops but, following the Treaty of Campoformio, the Austrians took over. In 1866, following the third war of independence and the subsequent plebiscitary vote, the town was united with Italy. In 1965 the Ministry of Education proclaimed the town a national monument, thus recognizing its historical and artistic importance. Also due to the advanced age of most of the buildings, which had not suffered damage during the two world wars, it was almost completely razed to the ground by the 1976 earthquake that devastated Friuli, but thanks to aid from all over the world. and to the tenacity of its inhabitants the town has risen and is today a model of the reconstruction that took place in Friuli following the earthquake.
