Geographical notes

Albareto is a center of the Val di Taro, Apennine valley of the Parma hills. It is 72 km away. from Parma, 54 from Sestri Levante. It borders on Liguria is Tuscany.

Background

The territory of Albareto has returned Etruscan and Ligurian finds, thus also testifying its close ties with the Ligurian and Tuscan territories for antiquity. The most significant find is an Etruscan funerary stone kept in the Archaeological Hall of the Seminary of Bedonia. Albareto belonged to the Diocese of Luni, then, when the latter disappeared, to the diocese of Sarzana. After the domination of the Goths, Byzantines and Lombards, it was given to the Monastery of San Colombano di Bobbio.

In the Middle Ages the town followed the fate of Borgotaro; it was however in the economic orbit of Varese Ligure, a possession of the Fieschis, a center with which it maintained close social relations especially when the Fieschis were masters of Borgotaro for a certain period. To signify the influence that this family had on Albareto the colors of the Fieschi - red and silver bands appear in the town's municipal coat of arms.

The twentieth century, in addition to wars, brought the phenomenon of emigration, common to the whole Valtaro. The second post-war period saw the economic recovery and the emergence of a moderate tourist development of summer climatic stay which gave the country a certain economic security and good development.

  • The territory of Albareto offers the possibility of excursions and walks in the woods of the Ghirardi Regional Nature Reserve; is one of the protected natural areas of the Emilia-Romagna region. Its establishment dates back to 2010 and has an area of ​​370 hectares formed by the territories of Albareto and Borgo Val di Taro.
