What see

  • Church of San Bernardino. It dates back to the 18th century and has a fine stucco decoration inside.

Santa Maria del Taro

Saint Mary
Ponte dei Priori

Location of the territory of Tornolo, it is an advanced point of the Valtaro towards the Liguria, whose border from Santa Maria is 6 kilometers away, at the Passo del Bocco; thirty minutes by car lead to Chiavari.

The town was an ancient settlement of the monastery of Bobbio on the Via Francigena. Its ancient parish church, built around 1120, was demolished and replaced by the new church at the beginning of the nineteenth century; the latter preserves a sixteenth-century marble statue depicting the Madonna and Child.

The Roman bridge of the Priori, in the center of the town, is actually a medieval monument. Santa Maria currently lives from tourism, but also from the ancient activity of building chairs, called chiavarine, Parisianor bells, known all over the world and with unmistakable characteristics; they were born from the ingenuity of a Chiavari carpenter named Campanino, from whom they took their name.

Itineraries

  • Castles of the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza - Scattered over the Parma and Piacenza Apennines, but also present in the plain to guard the natural border of the Po, the numerous castles of the ancient Duchy of Parma and Piacenza characterize the whole area. Originally military bulwarks, many of them have kept the appearance of an inaccessible fortress, many have gradually transformed their war nature into a refined noble residence; all perpetuate over time the atmosphere of adventure, fairytale and legend that has always been linked to castles, many of which tell of the presence of spirits and ghosts.
