Arco de Sao Jorge is a village on the north coast of Madeira (Portugal) in a circle Santana. It is a good starting point for exploring the north of the island, as it is in the middle.

getting there

There are several buses from Funchal in the place. You can reach the place with the bus company Rodoeste (via Sao Vicente or with the Horarios do Funchal via Santana. The latter offers more connections Santana to reach. From Funchal it is about as far over the Encumeada Pass and Sao Vicente.

  • rose Garden. The rose garden at Quinta do Arco is well worth seeing, especially since roses are not often found in Madeira. A number of hiking trails (to Boaventura (hiking trail next to the restaurant on the western edge of the village), to Cabanas (the hiking trail starts at about the level of Quinta do Arco), to Fora do Arco and from there up to Cabanas or along the coast to Rocha de Baixo and on to Sao Jorge) start in Arco. The hiking trails to Boca das Voltas and Levada do Rei, which start behind Cabanas, are also easy to reach.

A small fitness center is located next to Casa do Povo. In the summer of 2018, a small swimming pool was also created by the sea.

There are two small shops in town that also have pubs assigned to them. The bakery - next to the Museo do Vinho - offers fresh bread in the evenings between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. Just before the signposted Praia is an ecological farm where you can buy fruit and vegetables. There is also a delivery service if required.

On the western edge there is a typical restaurant on the glazed first floor with a good view. Opposite the Quinta do Arco - in the Casa do Cha - there is another restaurant that offers coffee and cake, but also food and drinks.

That is highly recommended Casa das Hortênsias, in renovated old houses, with well-furnished holiday apartments and lavish Bed & Breakfast. The hosts take great care of the visitors.
