Borgo di Terzo is a municipality of the Lombardy.

To know

The name of the town derives from the fact that the noble Terzi family from Bergamo originated in this small village.

Geographical notes

Located in the area Prealps and great Lombard lakes in from Bergamo, is about 22 kilometers from Bergamo. It has a predominantly hilly area, belongs to the average Cavallina Valley and is crossed by the river Cherio. There is also a small stream, commonly known as Closale, which crosses the valley of the same name and then flows into the Cherio.

Background

The area was affected by settlements since Roman times, as evidenced by some artifacts found in the area. In the historical context, the news that has come down to us mainly concerns the Middle Ages: at that time, in fact, the town was completely surrounded by walls and fortifications with a castle that stood out over the valley. It also seems to have a considerable importance since it was the emperor Frederick Barbarossa himself who razed it to the ground in 1168.

Rebuilt a few years later, it was left in a state of absolute decay, so much so that time and subsequent buildings have erased all traces. The so-called, however, remains from that era Torrazzo, a medieval palace dating back to the thirteenth century, located in the upper part of the town.

On the whole you can still find a 17th century cloister that belonged to the convent of San Michele, which was definitively suppressed in 1797. But the main value is the internal well which, with its four white stone columns and Renaissance capitals, is considered a national monument. .
  • Parish Church of the Assumption. Its foundation seems to date back to the thirteenth century. Totally rebuilt four centuries later, it features a sandstone portal and works by Pietro Marone (Crowned Virgin and Saints Mary Magdalene, Eurosia and Lucia of 1594) and by Gian Paolo Cavagna (Christ the Redeemer).
