Caniço is a community on Madeira and belongs to the district Santa Cruz.
background
Caniço is one of the largest and fastest growing municipalities in Madeira, mainly due to Madeira's tourist development that began in Caniço. While in the 1960s the then 1200 residents of the village lived scattered across the slopes in isolated farmsteads, foreigners, predominantly Germans, settled here from the 1970s, and the first hotel complexes were built above the cliffs. This development was intensified in a second wave by the expansion of the airport in 2000.
Caniço, which has been promoted to town since 2005, was and remains the preferred place to stay for visitors, along with the capital Funchal, which is 7 km away. In the meantime, both places have grown together to form a kind of super-agglomeration in the southeast. While the original town center is near the motorway exit, the main tourist areas are in the southeastern districts of Caniço de Baixo and Garajau.
The formerly small-scale agriculture has therefore disappeared. The tourism industry located in Caniço is likely to be one of the island's most important employers.
