Lautenbach (Illert Chapel) - Reichental

it goes up through the stone valley
in the stone valley

From the Illert chapel it goes up to the left; after about 200 m turn right onto a narrow path that leads down to a small reservoir. From there it goes steeply upwards on a wide path, past the Daimler Benz area, to the Steintal sign location (8.5 km, 462 m).

Of the Lautenbach town center (Sign location Alte Kirche) via the sign locations Steintalstraße and Haus Lautenbach to the Steintal location (1.1 km).

It goes up through the wild Stone valley, past rock formations and the maple meadows. Passing the sign location Im Haselbrunnen (9.7 km, 627 m) you reach the Lautenfelsen, which are under nature protection. A bench on the rock with holes invites you to linger (panoramic view). A few meters further you reach the actual ones Lautenfelsen with sign location (10.7 km, 569 m), to which a narrow rocky path leads (viewpoint).

Hikers who started down in Lautenbach have already seen the imposing Lautenfelsen, they tower almost 100 meters into the air. According to legend, the devil once threw the large granite chunks of the block dump down from the devil's mill in his fury. You can find out about its special features on three information boards. The rock group with the surrounding mountain forest and the humid meadow valley has been a nature reserve since 1991 and an important habitat for a variety of animal and plant species.

Continue on the Fortsweg down to the Heilwiesen sign (11.2 km, 521 m). If you want to shorten this, you will reach Lautenbach after about 1.2 km.

Information board on the Lautenfelsen

Now the ascent to the next takes place on the left Climax: the Elsbethhütte (12.5 km, 591 m) in the Rockert, another vantage point from which you can see the Murg Valley.

From here you can alternatively use the Landslide Get off for the Obertsrot S-Bahn station (approx. 4 km).

The rock group on the Rockert, which rises up to 70 m in height, is also under nature protection. The Elsbethhütte got its name from a Countess von Eberstein, Elsbeth von Eberstein. In the world of legends she is known as a rocker woman Lute and rocker rocks were formed about 300 million years ago when liquid lava cooled down. Mainly through freezing water, which expanded in the crevices, the rock burst and formed today's rock formations. Geologists call this process wool sack weathering. Some rock faces look sulfur yellow, this is due to the crust and reindeer lichens that "stick" to the rock.

The subsequent path through the rocks is certainly one of the highlights of the Gernsbacher Runde. The Gernsbacher Runde also follows the path to the next signpost in Rockert (13.3 km, 635 m) Landslide, another hiking trail that starts from Gaggenau-Bad Rotenfels leads up to the Schliffkopf.

The route continues past the Haselgrundhütte (14.4 km, 634 m), past the Haselgrund and Flachsland signs to the Old Oaks (15.7 km, 623 m) with an idyllic clearing.

The Fatima Chapel was built in 1954. With this chapel, the Reichentaler thanked Jesus Christ and the Mother of God to the returnees from captivity during the Second World War 1939-1945, some of whom only returned to Reichental 5 years later. For this reason it is also called the homecoming chapel.

The Gernsbacher Runde turns right here and reaches the L76b country road via the sign location Ruckgraben at the exit of Reichental, sign location Am Ölberg (17.8 km, 353 m).

in the Reichenbachtal
Reichenbachtal

The hay barn meadows of the middle Murg valley between Forbach and Gernsbach, like this one here Reichenbachtal, are a most remarkable document of cultural history. They reflect a way of doing business that has mostly become antiquated today. These huts were first mentioned in 1683. In the Reichenbachtal, a diverse fauna and flora that is unique in its composition has developed on the hay barn meadows, many animals threatened with extinction (especially birds, insects and reptiles) find optimal living conditions here. Between 1720 and 1760 there were some noticeable waves of clearing and so it came about that around 1830 the Reichenbachtal changed from a forest valley to a meadow valley.

The hiking trail in the Reichenbachtal is lined with works by well-known artists from Baden-Württemberg and other European countries. The art objects consist of the materials wood, stone, paper, metal, concrete, plastic and water. They show the current artistic work in its diversity and stand, hang and lie clearly visible along the path, a few also hidden in the water and in some hay huts. Every year the art trail is supplemented by new works that blend in harmoniously or in contrast to the cultural landscape. All works of art are on loan from the artists and therefore remain on the path with varying lengths of time.

On the Kunstweg, guided tours are offered every 1st Sunday of the month in summer, which usually start at 10.15 a.m. at the information board at the lower end of the Reichenbach Valley (after the Holzbau Wurm company). Additional Information: http://www.kunstweg-am-reichenbach.de/

Eberstein Castle (refreshments available)

Eberstein Castle
the Eberstein Castle

In 1272 the Eberstein Castle was built by the Counts of Eberstein, which replaced the Alt-Eberstein Castle near Baden-Baden as their ancestral seat. One reason for the castle building was the reclamation and development of the Middle Murgtal, for which the Ebersteiners were responsible. For a while they were even more powerful than the Margraves of Baden. At the end of the 14th century, the Ebersteiners had to sell half of their properties to the Margraves of Baden, as Count Wolf von Eberstein was heavily in debt. Half of the castle passed to the margraves. From now on, two noble families ruled over the county of Eberstein (rule of condominiums), but this led to massive disputes between the two lords of the castle. Margrave Friedrich, the first Grand Duke of the newly created state of Baden by Napoleon, had the complex restored for himself and his wife by the Baden architect Friedrich Weinbrenner in 1803/04, thus saving it from further deterioration. During this renovation phase, the castle complex was largely given its current appearance. The castle became a representative residential complex with the character of a castle.

In 2000 the margrave family had to sell the castle. Since 2005 there has been a 4-star superior hotel with two different restaurants and a winery. Star chef Bernd Werner runs it with his wife. The traditional castle tavern is available for hikers (in summer with a beautiful plane terrace).

Ascension to Mercury

The tunnel in this area of the Gernsberg is one of the attempts to use the ore deposits economically. The area around Gernsbach was particularly intensively searched in the 18th century when the Baden margraves tried to restore their principality, which had been battered by the previous wars. Legend has it that this is the entrance to an underground palace of the meerkats, who keep a great treasure of gold and silver in the interior of the Gernsberg.

The so-called “Erdmännlespfad” continues to the Forlenkopf sign (27.7 km, 362 m). Through old trees, follow the Ebersteiner Rose to the right and reach the Amandaschau sign (28.4 km, 394 m).

The last big ascent of the Gernsbacher Runde then starts from the nightingale. Right past the hotel-restaurant over the signposts Kieferscheid (31.9 km, 394 m) and Kohlplättel (32.6 km, 449 m) to the Rushes (33.3 km, 516 m), a saddle between the Murg- and Oostal (Baden-Baden) with a refuge and beautiful viewpoints.

From Binsenwasen 1.5 km to the Neuhaus bus stop (line 244, Sattley sign) or 2.0 km to the valley station of the Merkur cable car (bus 204/205 to Baden-Baden).

Further in hairpin bends, some steeply up to the Mercury peak (34.5 km, 644-668 m).

The mountain Mercury is named after the ancient Roman god of trade and commerce Mercurius. At the highest point of the mountain is the Mercury Tower, a broadcast tower of the SWR, from whose platform one has a wonderful view. In addition to a restaurant, a lawn, barbecue areas and playgrounds, there are also two here Paraglider launch sites.

Between the mountain station and the Merkur tower you can find out in the geological Open-air exhibition "Mercury's Cube" Interesting facts about the origin, properties and use of 17 types of rock that occur around Baden-Baden.

It has been leading to Mercury since 1913 one of the longest and steepest funiculars in Germany, it overcomes 370 vertical meters with a maximum gradient of 54% and measures a length of 1.2 km. As an important international spa town of the 19th century, Baden-Baden was in fierce competition with the other spa towns and fashion spas in Europe and was therefore very interested in offering its guests the most beautiful and modern attractions. When the casino ban came into force in 1872, the city with the casino lost its main attraction and most important source of income. New ideas were necessary so that the spa town remained attractive for its guests. Back then, the valley station could even be reached by tram.

Public transport connection: with the funicular down, at the valley station with buses to Baden-Baden (lines 204, 205), change to line 244 in the direction of Gernsbach at the Ludwig-Wilhelm-Stift stop. To Baden-Baden train station with bus 205 (direct) or 204 (with change).

The Gernsbacher Runde leads in bends down to the Wendeplatte sign (35.4 km, 570 m). Follow the hiking trail steeply downhill in hairpin bends, you cross several forest paths. Descent to Gernsbach
Sattley ridge between Baden-Baden and Gernsbach, Neuhaus bus stop
