Geographical notes
Located in the north of the Val Rendena it is not only the municipality with the fewest inhabitants of the Valley, but also of the whole Region. It is 58 km away. from Trento, 103 from Brescia.
Background
The place where the country stands would not be the same as its origin. It is said that it stood in the clearing north of the church of San Giovanni. The church area is commonly called Castèl, it seems in memory of a Castello Massimo from which the name of the town derives: Massimeno.
The ancient town was destroyed by a landslide, or perhaps by a fire, the latter event common to several towns in the Valley. Massimeno was rebuilt further down and retains some massive peasant houses that show the ancient characteristics of rural mountain buildings.
The ancient practice of agriculture has given way to works dedicated to tourism, in the wake of the development in this sense of the whole Valley.

How to get around
What see
- Church of San Luigi. Along the road that leads to Bocenago is the small church dedicated to San Luigi. The simple and bare interior shows some recently restored frescoes. On the facade is depicted St. Louis praying; in the background stands out in the bell tower of the parish church of Massimeno.
- Church of San Giovanni Battista. Tradition has it that it arose on the remains of a fortification from the late Roman period. There were found tombs, coins, weapons and a skeleton in his armor. Mention is made of the church of San Giovanni Battista as early as 1400. Like many ancient churches in Val Rendena, it was frescoed in 1534 by Simone II Baschenis of the family of painters from Bergamo who left testimony of himself throughout the valley. The frescoes represent the Madonna of the Sepulcher, Virgin Mary enthroned, Saint Christopher with the child Jesus.
- The legend
- It is a popular belief handed down for centuries that anyone who wants to have a child must put his head in the hollow of a granite stoup walled up in the church.
- Parish Church of Our Lady of Loreto. The parish church of Massimeno retains two paintings from the sacred building that once stood in its place, which are located in the presbytery. The ancient private chapel gave way to the parish church in 1861, when it was built with a single nave but of great spaciousness. The main altar is in white marble and houses the altarpiece dedicated to the Madonna of Loreto. A massive granite portal stands out on the façade.
- Capital of the Bàgole. This votive shrine was built in 1834; the Madonna del Rosario is depicted in the company of San Giovanni Battista and Sant 'Antonio. In this place, four human skeletons were discovered during agricultural work which were surmounted by a granite slab: the same one that now constitutes the roof of the capitals,
- Capital of the Madonna. It is located at an intersection on the road that, through the woods, leads to Bocenago. The construction of this votive shrine dates back to 1654 but was subsequently remodeled, it was built at the behest of the community of Massimeno and has always been preserved with loving care by its inhabitants.
- Capital of Martìn. The sacred shrine shows the depictions of the Deposition, of San Martino and of Sant'Antonio Abate
Points of naturalistic interest
- Mule track Salagada. It is one of the ancient roads of the Valley that has been preserved as it once was. It is entirely paved (hence the name salagada) and was used to reach the pastures of Malga Plan and the so-called houses from mont, homes that were used in the summer when the inhabitants of the country led the herds to pastures. The road was retraced backwards, from the pasture to the village, when in autumn they came back down with beasts and sledges laden with hay and foliage for the barn,
- Perforated larches. At one time the resin was extracted from the larches (wide) from which, through distillation, turpentine was obtained which was used in medicine. To obtain it, a hole was made in the hoof of the plant; the hole was then closed with a wooden plug to allow it to fill with resin, which was then extracted uncorking the plant. Many of these centuries-old larches still retain the plug. The resin collection ended after the 1950s, when turpentine began to be chemically produced.
