The Muldental is the part of the Central Saxon hill country between regions Zschopautal in the south East, Altzella monastery district in the east and that Kohrener Land in the West. To the north it closes Leipzig lowland bay and the Düben-Dahlener Heide at. It is not an official name (until 2008 there was a Muldental district, but it is not congruent with the travel region), but the Freiberger and Zwickauer Mulde, or after their confluence, the United Mulde, are the defining rivers of the region.

background
getting there
By train
The Mulde valley is traversed by numerous railway lines, some of which are still in service: the Leipzig – Grimma – Döbeln line is in the northern part (regional trains run every hour). In the west, the line Leipzig – Geithain – Chemnitz (regional express every hour, plus regional train Leipzig – Geithain) grazes and in the east the line Chemnitz – Döbeln – Riesa (hourly regional train). There is a connection to the long-distance network in Riesa and Leipzig. The southernmost part of the region still belongs to the route network of the City-Bahn Chemnitz (line C13 Chemnitz – Burgstädt; every hour).
In the street
The Muldental is affected by three motorways: A 4 (Erfurt – Chemnitz – Dresden) in the south, A 14 (Leipzig – Dresden) in the north and A 72 (Hof – Chemnitz – Leipzig) in the west. The federal highways B 107 (Wurzen – Grimma – Rochlitz – Chemnitz), B 175 (Döbeln – Rochlitz – Waldenburg) and B 176 (Borna – Colditz – Hartha) run right through the region.
mobility
In addition to the already under #Getting there The so-called plus bus lines (regional buses that run every hour) play a role on the Grimma – Bad Lausick and Grimma – Colditz routes. Outside the main lines, the buses often run only sporadically. In order to be flexible, the car can therefore be the means of choice. The Muldental is also well suited for cycling. The most interesting places for tourists are lined up along the Muldetal cycle path.

Castles and Palaces

- Wurzen: oldest castle in Germany
- 1 Mildenstein Castle - The old imperial castle rises above the banks of the Freiberg Mulde on a steep porphyry rock. Even today, the imposing sight of it gives an idea of the importance. With its almost 1000-year history, the complex is one of the oldest castles in Saxony. In direct sight of the “Old Salt Road” from Halle to Bohemia, it certainly also performed tasks to protect it.
For 55 years the museum was the exhibition site for the “Döbelner Giant Boot”. As a result of a legal dispute, it had to be returned to the city of Döbeln in 2012. Two shoemakers from Leisnig then made a new boot. The Quiet giant boot holds the Guinness record as the world's largest boot with a shaft height of 4.90 m and a sole length of 2.20 m.

- 2 Colditz Castle - The complex was first mentioned as a castle in 1046. After several disasters, it was rebuilt as a Renaissance castle after 1520. In the period that followed, the castle often housed the hunting parties of the Dresden court. After the death of August II, the palace underwent a major change in use almost exclusively for social purposes.
During the Nazi era, a protective custody camp was established here before it was converted into a special prisoner-of-war camp for officers from 1939. Its most prominent inmate was Winston Churchill's nephew Giles Romilly. The multiple escape attempts by the predominantly British internees from this period are legendary. Tunnel excavations and even secret aircraft construction are reported in the local museum.
After the end of the war, another hospital was set up up here, which existed until 1996. Since 1996, the Colditz Castle Society has endeavored to preserve and use the ensemble for cultural, museum and commercial purposes.

- 3 Rochlitz Castle - Originally Romanesque imperial castle from the 10th century, converted into the castle of the Margraves of Meissen in the last quarter of the 14th century, further modified and supplemented in the 15th and 16th centuries, so that today it presents a mix of styles from Romanesque to Renaissance.
- 4 Rochsburg Castle (7 km northeast of Penig) - Spornburg from the 12th century; while the entire complex and the outer bailey still have a high medieval shape, the residential building was converted into a more comfortable renaissance castle.
- 5 Moated Castle Podelwitz (5 km northeast of Colditz)
Churches and monasteries

- 6 Monastery book (just under 5 km east of Leisnig) - The former Cistercian monastery from the 12th century was again heavily damaged by the flood of the century after extensive restoration work in the post-reunification period. A support association took care of renewed repairs and transformation into a cultural and historical center. Today there are monthly farmers' markets, exhibitions and events in the monastery. One of the highlights of the year is the monastery and harvest festival in September.
- 7 Wechselburg Abbey (7 km south of Rochlitz) - former Benedictine compartment with a late Romanesque basilica.
- 8 Nimbschen Monastery (3 km south of downtown Grimma) - ruins of a Cistercian convent; Katharina von Bora was a nun here until she fled with eight of her religious sisters in 1523 and later married Martin Luther.
various
- 9 Höfgen (4 km southeast of downtown Grimma) with late Gothic fortified church, ship mill and "monument smithy" (artist and conference center). From Easter to the end of October there is a cable ferry between Nimbschen and Höfgen (Wed – Sun).
