Mulderadweg - Mulderadweg

The Mulde is a southern tributary of the Elbe in Saxony. The river system consists of the Zwickau and Freiberg Mulde. Both rivers originate in the Ore Mountains and unite north of Colditz. As a united (or united) Mulde, both rivers then continue their way together towards the Elbe.

By the way, the largest tributary of the Freiberg Mulde is the Zschopau. There is also a cycle path along its banks.

Route profile

Hollow association near Sermuth

Length: a total of 400 km The cycle path consists of three parts:

  • 1. Zwickau Mulde - From Schöneck to the Mulden Association at Sermuth Colditz- approx. 150 km,
  • 2. Freiberg Mulde - from Moldava to the basin association approx. 120 km,

The slightly different distances are due to unmarked sections of the route, especially in the upper reaches and different route variants.

Cycle path on the Freiberg Mulde near Nossen

The cycle route on the Freiberger Mulde begins in Nossen and leads over Chub and Horse wine to Sermuth to the confluence with the Zwickauer Mulde. The Nossen-Sermuth route is around 50 km.

At the Nossen train station, follow the sign "Klosterpark Altzella", right over the railway bridge and immediately after the bridge left down onto the narrow path between the railway line and Mulde. Past the old furniture factory Nossen, then turn left and follow the small bicycle signs. After around 1.5 km you will reach the monastery entrance with its "Romanesque portal", which is well worth seeing. From the Altzella monastery on the left side of the Mulde on a forest path to the Gleisberg bridge, then back to the right side of the river. Here on the K7522, in parts on a paved bike path Horse wine. On the way you pass the "Geotope Gabbrofelsen Roßwein" (information boards). A detour to the old town to the town hall is recommended, there is a replica of an old Saxon post mile column. Further downstream on the left side of the Mulde on the cycle path (different quality) to Niederstriegis, there again on the right side of the Mulde. Scenic route up to Chub. The "Schiffsbrücke" leads to the city center (worth seeing!). A newly paved bike path on the right side of the river leads to Großbauchlitz and Technitz to the mouth of the Zschopau in the hollow. There is a sign directly behind the passage under the railway line. Passing the hydroelectric power station, you reach Klosterbuch and then back over the Mulde Quietly (Mildenstein Castle). Follow the signs to the right over the bridge with a beautiful view of the castle over the Muldental, then cross the river again to Altleisnig. Cross the Mulde over a new pedestrian bridge and stay on the right side of the foot until just before Sermuth. There you can take a short detour to the Muldenvereinigung, along the United Mulde over Kösser (Muldenbrücke) to Kleinbothen. There the cycle path begins on the former railway line to Grimma. Passing the Nimbschen monastery, you reach the Muldentalbahn cycle path in Grimma.

Castle in Bad Düben
End of the cycle path at the Jagdbrücke in Dessau

United Mulde section:From the Muldenvereinigun near Sermuth north of Colditz, the cycle path is initially signposted on the right side of the river. Before Kleinbothen you change again to the left bank of the river. Then the route follows the old railway line via Kloster Nimbschen to Grimma. You drive through a scenic area through the forest along the river, past the old oak, where the passenger and cyclist ferry to the ship mill leaves on the other side of the river (if necessary, press the bell for the ferryman). At the ruins of the Nimbschen monastery, where the future wife of Martin Luther spent part of her youth, the cycle path makes a detour to the right past the hotel. Before Grimma you have to cross the federal highway 107, then you reach the suspension bridge in Grimma. Right over the bridge into the Grimma city forest and again on the former railway line on the right side of the Mulde to the Pöppelmann Bridge, which was destroyed by the flood of the century (reconstruction by 2012).

  • Spice up
    • Between Grimma and Wurzen, the former railway line along the right bank of the river was expanded as a cycle path (paved route, 18.5 km). This section is known as the Muldentalbahn cycle path. It is free of motorized traffic and is particularly family-friendly, there are no inclines. The variant on the left via stretchers and Trebsen is not free of motor vehicle traffic and has a steep incline. The nature of the path varies there and is not paved throughout.
  • Eilenburg
  • Bad Düben
  • Bitterfeld-Wolfen
  • Dessau - Mouth of the united (or united) Mulde into the Elbe

Note: If you are familiar with the route, remove the heading "Corner points of the route" and replace this section with a detailed route description with stages. It is best to simply work the place names into the stages. You can find instructions on how to do this here .
