  • Fallingwater (Mill Run, 80 km southeast of Pittsburgh): Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and literally built on top of a waterfall from 1935 to 1937, the residential home is one of the most famous in the country. A true cult site of modern architecture that can be visited on guided tours. Please refer Laurel Highlands. Wikipedia
  • Lancaster County: County in southeast Pennsylvania, famous for its high proportion of Amish (also: Pennsylvania Dutch), a Protestant minority whose members often follow a way of life that was common in the 18th century. Although most of the Amish people live in greater or lesser isolation, others are in daily contact with the outside world, trade in Amish products (especially wood products and food) or run restaurants. You can learn even more about the Amish in the region's museums.
  • Near the village of 245 souls Shanksville On September 11, 2001, the fourth terrorist hijacked plane crashed after a prisoner revolt. To commemorate the 44 fatalities, a memorial was erected at the accident site, which is to become a national monument under the administration of the US National Park Service. In contrast to the locations of the attacks in Washington and New York City this is about history and not patriotism. The inner circle is only accessible to family members of the victims.

Almost 100 years later, the Battle of Gettysburg took place here, which marked the turn of the American Civil War.

getting there

Map of Pennsylvania

The airport Philadelphia (PHL) can be reached with intercontinental flights directly from Europe. A flight to Newark (EEA) in New Jersey is an option if the destination is in eastern Pennsylvania (e.g. 135 km to Allentown, 140 km to Philadelphia). The second major airport in the state is Pittsburgh (PIT) - mainly domestic flights are offered here, but at least seasonal there are also direct connections from Europe. It is followed by Harrisburg (MDT) in the southeast, Allentown / Lehigh Valley (ABE) and Wilkes-Barre / Scranton (AVP), which are of more regional importance.

The southeast of the state is very well served by rail. On the one hand, the high-speed train runs on the so-called Northeastern Corridor Boston-New York-Philadelphia-Washington DC Acela Express, on the other hand the slightly slower one Northeast Regional. The lines run from the southern states Crescent from New Orleans and Atlanta, Silver service and palmetto from Savannah GA and Carolinian from Charlotte NC as well Northeast Regional from Norfolk or Newport News VA here. The line Keystone connects New York with Philadelphia and Harrisburg several times a day. The Pennsylvanian continues to Pittsburgh once a day. From Chicago and Cleveland in the Midwest you can take the Capitol Limited to Pittsburgh.

Furthermore, all larger cities can be reached by long-distance buses.

  • Knoebel's Amusement Park, Route 487, Elysburg; 4 km east of the town center. Somewhat out of the way, between Harrisburg and Scranton, is home to one of the largest amusement parks in the country pay-per-ride-System. While you usually only get access to such parks after you have paid the (rather high) entrance fee (and can then use the rides for free), here you only pay per trip. This pays off especially for families with reticent children who prefer to see rides than to try them out. The attractions include more than 50 rides, including two first-class roller coasters, a historic horse carousel from 1913 and a ghost train that already existed in the Discovery Channel has been seen. It also includes a swimming pool and golf course. Seasonally changing opening times. The park is completely closed in autumn and winter.

shop

If you have ever visited the state of Pennsylvania, you should do your textile purchases right here, as there is no extra tax on textiles, as is usual in the United States. Otherwise there will be a little surprise at the cash register with a tax surcharge of approx. 5% to approx. 10%! The shops do this consciously to show that the state actually makes everything so expensive!
