Ponta de Sao Lourenço is a nature reserve on Madeira.

background

Ponta de Sao Lourenço belongs to the municipality of Caniçal in the municipality of Machico Madeira.

Most holidaymakers already take a first look at the barren and inhospitable landscape of the northeastern headland of São Lourenço when they land on Santa Cruz. The high (150 m) and the cliffs sloping steeply to the north offer a clear contrast to the evergreen landscapes in the interior of the island with their spectacular views.

Even without a hike, this can already be enjoyed in detail at the parking lot at the northern end of the ER-109, which is why the nature park is one of the most popular points on an island tour.

By car on the VR-1 coastal highway Machico to Caniçal. Soon after passing the Canical Free Port Zone, a road branches off to the left from the ER-109 leading to the peninsula.

  • It leads on a narrow, but well-developed route with alternative points to the northern vantage point with a parking lot and snack tables on a spectacular vantage point. This trail is recommended if you just want to enjoy the view and then continue driving. (This place is currently marked in the geotags)
  • The ER 109 leads along the Praia da Prainha bathing bay to the Baia de Abra car park, from where most hikers start their tour (by bypassing a radio station, but also possible from the northern parking lot).

By bus
