The contemporary town has medieval origins; the area was, however, already interested in settlements in Roman times. The area, like many others in theOltrepò Mantua, was reclaimed by the friars of San Benedetto between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, when the Bishop of Mantua Giacomo de 'Benfatti granted the territory to Luigi Gonzaga. It followed the destinies of the Mantua family, to then enter the Austrian dominions until Unity.

The earthquake, which in Emilia it also cost numerous victims, in the Oltrepò it hit the historic centers of numerous cities causing collapses, subsidence and injuries in churches and ancient monuments and damaging many others. The centers most affected were Wife, Pegognaga, San Giacomo delle Segnate, Poggio Rusco, Quistello, Gonzaga, San Giovanni del Dosso.

What see
- 1 Parish church of San Lorenzo, piazza Italia 34. It stands in front of the Episcopal Villa, now the Town Hall. Dedicated to San Lorenzo, it was built by Bishop Antonio Di Bagno in the years between 1751 and 1754. Imposing in size, it measures thirty meters in height. It is built in Baroque style and has two red marble column-bearing lions on the facade which are attributed to Pier Paolo and Jacobello delle Masegne and come from the fifteenth-century facade of the cathedral of Mantua. The church then underwent renovations and extensions in 1776 and 1886. A large painting depicting Sant'Anselmo blessing the arms of Matilda was placed on the counter façade, a work by Francesco Maria Ranieri known the Schivenoglia; a further proof of how much the figure of the Grand Countess was - and still is - particularly loved in this area.
Before this temple, Quingentole had a parish church on the same site that had its origins before the year 1000, and was then demolished to allow for the new construction. Following the 2012 earthquake, the church was closed for restoration. Once the work was completed, it was returned to its normal functionality in March 2017.
- 2 Great Villa of the Sun (now Town Hall), Italy square. It was the large summer residence of the Bishops of Mantua built in the first half of the fifteenth century. It occupies the opposite side of the church, in the large and harmonious town square, which also overlooks some noble palaces and a painted portico. The villa was enlarged at the end of the fifteenth century; in the sixteenth century it was decorated inside by Giulio Romano and was equipped with a spectacular garden.

Around
- Parish church of Coriano - The town parish church is one of the many that Matilde di Canossa had built in her vast estates. Remarkable are the remains of frescoes; the momentum of the tall bell tower is astonishing.
- San Benedetto Po - The Abbey of Polirone perpetuates the memory of Matilde di Canossa, the Grand Countess which linked the name of the town to its fame. The majesty and beauty of the church and the convent structures, combined with the wide breadth of the square, make it a destination of great interest.
