Ribeiro Frio is a destination in the eastern highlands Madeira. It is roughly in the middle of the ER 103 road, which connects Funchal and Santana along the eastern border of the central high mountains and is therefore relatively close to the peaks of the Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo. A state trout farm is operated here, a restaurant that is quite large by local standards and a souvenir shop.

Ribeiro Frio is essentially the starting or end point for some hikes in the eastern highlands and a stop for some round trips across the island.

Administratively, the place belongs to the municipality of Faial in the district of Santana. In terms of tourism, it can be assigned to the interior of the country, but equally from Santana like Funchal to reach out.

getting there

By plane

From Madeira's only airport, Santa Cruz, you can get to Ribeiro Frio in around 40 minutes via the motorway and the ER 103.

By bus

Ribeiro Frio is owned by the company as part of the overland lines between Funchal, Santana and Machico SAM served. As of 2011, these were lines 56 and 103, but this should currently be verified.

In the street

Ribeiro Frio is roughly in the middle of the ER 103 connecting road between Funchal and Santana, where there is a connection to the coastal motorway. These should also be the fastest access routes from other destinations. Alternatively, ER 202 and ER 207 connect the place with the east coast and the Santa Cruz airport via Santo da Serra.

Balcoes About 30 minutes longer and more manageable without obstacles walk to a vantage point over a valley basin with a wide view over the northeast coast to Porto Santo. The well-signposted path branches off to the left about 50 m north of the restaurant.

Practical advice

Ribeiro Frio is a destination for excursions. Individual travelers should be prepared for the fact that large and medium-sized tourist buses can line up here and that their occupancy populates the facilities. During the season, the walk to the Balcoes, which is manageable for everyone, should be tackled before 11:00.

Ultimately, all destinations on the island can be reached from Ribeiro Frio. In the immediate vicinity is the spur road to the parking lot below the Pico do Arieiro, from where the Pico Ruivo can be reached in a hike.
