The southern section of the D-route D9 takes cyclists 430 km away from the motorways Main cycle path all the way to the Alps Allgäu. Route description with sights

The sights of the tour include the well-preserved town centers of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dinkelsbühl, Nördlingen and Landesberg am Lech. Shortly before Füssen, the romantic highlight comes with Neuschwanstein Castle. The route is based on the tourist attractions and therefore makes some detours.

1st stage: Würzburg - Bad Mergentheim 57.9 km

Total ascent: 501 meters in altitude, highest point: 356m above sea level, lowest point: 168m above sea level

  • The stage leads from Wurzburg up into the Irtenberg forest. Then it goes downhill or flat through fields and small villages into the Welzbachtal to the stage destination. This ends shortly before Tauberbischofsheim in the "lovely Taubertal". From now on the route runs together with the "Liebliches Taubertal" cycle path

2nd stage: Bad Mergentheim - Rothenburg o.d. T. 50.2 km

Total ascent: 492 meters in altitude, highest point: 418m above sea level, lowest point: 201m above sea level

3rd stage: Rothenburg o.d. T. - Feuchtwangen 32.2 km

Total ascent: 322 meters in altitude, highest point: 529m above sea level, lowest point: 366m above sea level

  • The stage leads downhill from Rothenburg to Gebsattel. The path from Gebsattel to Bellershausen is relatively flat. From here the route then leads briefly but steeply upwards Schillingsfürst, the highest place in the Frankenhöhe. The stage ends in Wet cheeks.

4th stage: Feuchtwangen - Dinkelsbühl 26.7 km

  • The stage leads from Nordlingen with slight inclines to the confluence of the Wörnitz in the Danube, to Donauwörth.

7th stage: Donauwörth - Augsburg 71 km

  • It is the longest stage of the cycle path. Of Donauwörth the route leads into the Lech Valley to the stage location augsburg.

8th stage: Augsburg - Landsberg am Lech 55.7 km

Nordlinger Ries
  • From Schongau this more easterly route leads to Rottenbuch. From Rottenbuch it goes up on dirt roads Wildsteig. This is also the highest point of the stage. After Füssen it is now only downhill.

The Forggensee lies between hallech and füssen. As a small detour, the lake can be runned over a length of around 30 kilometers.

In the Nördlinger Ries there is the possibility to ride the crater round Nördlinger Ries for approx. It is a loop in the 185-kilometer cycle path From crater to crater. In the course of the route you will visit the city, among other things Wemding.
