Saalfeld lies between the Thuringian Slate Mountains and the Thuringian Forest and has about 25,000 inhabitants.

background

Saalfeld became an imperial domain at an early stage, but arrived under Philipp von Schwaben Thuringia. As a result, Saalfeld often changed hands until the town and area became an independent duchy in 1681 under Johann Ernst, the youngest son of Duke Ernst the Pious. Saalfeld was also the minting town of the Upper Saxon district. Here, on October 10, 1806, a battle between the French and Prussians took place, in which Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia met his death.
