Schauenburg ruins

The castle ruins with only a few remaining wall remains are located on a 500 m high mountain cone in the area of the "Hoofer Pforte" above Schauenburg-Hoof. Climbing the mountain is less worthwhile because of the castle ruins itself, but rather because of the beautiful view.

View from the Schauenburg in north-west direction. Front right in the picture: Since summer 2011 there have been 4 "landscape thrones" made of wood, which were built as part of the "Habichtswaldsteig" project. Everyone has to decide for themselves about the practical use of the thrones and, above all, their seating comfort (maybe nice for the family photo as a backdrop).
  • Directions: Access is via the B 520. In the area of the saddle, turn off the road in the direction of Hoof. Then immediately left again over the railway line to the parking lot 1 . Attention: Do not park in the guest parking lot of the restaurant (prohibition sign), but at the back of the farm road on the hard shoulder. The castle hill can also be reached by public transport. The next bus stop to access the footpath is the "Schauenburg-Hoof Bahnhof" stop (name in the timetable information of the NVV. Bus lines 52 (Kassel Fernbahnhof Wilhelmshöhe - Naumburg) and 58 (Baunatal - Schaunburg-Elmshagen) stop here
  • Ascent to the castle ruins: From the farm road opposite the inn you climb through meadows and some forest on the signposted Habichtswaldsteig to the mountain top. Sometimes there are stairs in the way (about 500 m distance with about 80 to 100 meters of altitude). By the way, you will find a couple of benches on the way to take a breather. Incidentally, the hiking board does not show all the paths. It is best to look at Openstreetmap beforehand or print it out. Here the castle hill is precisely recorded with probably all paths.
  • View: The view extends to the east Baunatal until Hohen Meissner. But the westerly view over Breitenbach is even more beautiful Weidelsburg. On a clear day you can even go up to the Upland with your friends Ettelsberg look above Willingen. On the top of the mountain there is a wooden distance board that explains the goals depending on the direction in which you are looking. Benches with tables land for breaks and picnics. Since summer 2011 there have also been 4 "landscape thrones" made of wood up here, which are part of the project "Habichtswaldsteig"were erected.
  • Circular walks: There is also a walking board at the parking lot mentioned above. There are two circular hiking trails marked in yellow: No. 1. as a small 2 km long walk around the Burgberg and No. 2. as a small 5 km long hike. The circular route no. 2 also includes the Großer Schönberg. From the 483 m high hilltop at 1 you also have a beautiful view of the landscape. Note as of 23-09-2014: According to HNA.DE, the NSG was cordoned off as pasture and the extra tour 3 of the Habichtswaldsteig was moved. This means that circular hiking trail 2 has also been relocated here, which was identical in the course of the extra tour 3 here at the summit area of Großer Schönberg. the bank near the summit stone of the great Schönberg was allegedly moved "further up" according to the press release. The exact new location of the bank is unknown. It is not known whether such a fantastic panoramic view with 270 degrees is still possible from here.
