The market town lies on the northern edge of the Altmuehltal Nature Park on the border with Franconian Lake District. Neighboring communities are Heideck, Hilpoltstein and Greding in the district of Roth, Titting in the district Eichstatt and Nennslingen and mountains in the district Weissenburg-Gunzenhausen. Until 1972 the market town was part of the Hilpoltstein district.
