The Tokyo prefecture(Japanese: 東京 都, Tōkyō-to) lies in the region Kantō on the main Japanese island Honshu.

In the eastern third, the prefecture includes the 23 districts that are known as the Tokyo metropolitan area be considered. The region follows in a westerly direction Tama, in it lie numerous suburbs like Tama, Foxu and Hinowhose residents commute to Tokyo during the day. The Izu Islands in the Pacific are also part of Tokyo Prefecture.
Under Tokyo one understands mostly the 23 boroughs, which have the status of a City to have. The prefectures are adjacent to the prefecture of Tokyo Chiba, Saitama, Yamanashi and Kanagawa.
Tama region
It initially includes cities in the Kantō region such as
- Hachioji (540,000 inhabitants)
- Foxu (240 000)
- Chofu (210 000)
- Tama (140 000)
- Hino (170 000)
- Ōme (140 000)
These suburbs are easily accessible by local transport from Tokyo City. The area is mostly flat, but there are some mountains such as Takao san (599 m) and Jimba san (857 m), the area is a popular destination for hikers and cyclists. In addition, part of the region has retained its rural character, there is agricultural use, e.g. cultivation of buckwheat, which is why there are numerous shops for pasta here.
The district is located in the far west of the prefecture Nishitama. The area around the places Mizuho (35,000), Hinode (16,000), Okutama (6700) and Hinohara (3000 inhabitants) is much less populated, the landscape is more mountainous, the mountains higher: the mountain Mitō is 1528 m high, the Kumotori even 2017 m high, it is one of the 100 most famous mountains in Japan.
Izu Islands
The Izu Islands lie in front of the peninsula Izu, however, to the Shizuoka Prefecture belongs. The islands are of volcanic origin, the largest of which is Ōshima, which is closest to Tokyo and is popular with visitors. Just like the neighboring islands of Toshima, Niijima and Kōzushima, it belongs to the Fuji Hakone Izu National Park.
The furthest away are those Ogasawara Islands, also known as the Bonin Islands, they are about 1000 km south.

Although the Japanese are very interested in foreign languages, Japanese is spoken almost exclusively. English is only spoken in hotels, at the most popular sights or at major train stations. Even in Tokyo it is difficult to communicate with English alone.
