The city Waldsassen, cultural center of the Upper Palatinate Stiftlandes, is not far from the Czech border in northeast Bavaria.

Waldsassen Abbey, founded in 1115, was free of the empire, owned an area of ​​660 km² in 1794 with an income of over 200,000 guilders, came to Bavaria in 1802 and was secularized in 1803.Waldsassen is idyllically situated in the valley of the Wondreb river between the Upper Palatinate Forest and the Steinwald. There is a lot on offer here for those interested in culture and nature lovers alike. The well-attended Basilica concerts or the events of the chamber music group invite you to enjoy music. The baroque monastery library is also definitely worth a visit. The basilica is one of the most beautiful baroque churches in southern Germany and the original rotunda of the Kappl Church, known throughout Germany, is only a stone's throw from Waldsassen. And for those who really love it, there are musicians' get-togethers in Kondrau or other places in the area. The popular cult drink of the Upper Palatinate is served regularly in two Zoigl rooms.

The rail connection is no longer in operation, so that the next train stations are now in Wiesau, Marktredwitz (Hof – Nürnberg railway line) and Arzberg (Nuremberg – Czech Republic railway line).

  • 1 Collegiate Basilica built 1682 - 1704 by the church builder Georg Dientzenhofer and Abraham Leuthner, one of the greatest baroque churches in Bavaria. The church is open daily from 7.30 a.m. until dusk. Guided tours take place from Easter to October every Tuesday at 3 p.m. and every Friday at 11.30 a.m. for EUR 3.00 per person.
