The Grande Randonnée 5, in short GR5 is a popular walking route that runs from Hoek van Holland by means of Belgium, Luxembourg and along the French eastern border to Nice, over a total distance of about 2500 kilometers. The route is largely marked with the well-known white-red markings for long-distance hiking and is one of the most popular of the European hiking routes. It is also an important part of the European walking route E2, which also by England and Scotland carries.

What makes the GR5 particularly attractive is the fact that it starts in the wetland polder landscape of the Dutch province Zealand and through a series of mountain ranges of ascending height to the French Alps runs. Crossed successively the hills of the FlemishKempen, the Ardennes in Wallonia, the vineyards of Luxembourg, the Vosges in the Alsace, the French Jura and finally, in full length and including the Mont Blanc, the French alps.

Accessibility

stay overnight

To spend the night you will occasionally have to deviate from the actual route. Especially in France there are many chambres d'hôtes (bed & breakfast), also in the smaller places. However, it can happen that you suddenly have to walk many tens of kilometers in a row before you encounter something again, for example in the Lorraine part of the route.

Route descriptions and map material

The route is marked everywhere with red and white signs. Here and there the GR5 coincides with other well-known hiking routes, such as the Pilgrim Route to Santiago de Compostela.
