Zandobbio is a center of the Lombardy.

To know

Geographical notes

It is located in a side valley of the Cavallina Valley, which is wedged up to the hill at the top of which is the Sanctuary of San Giovanni delle Formiche, which is located in the territory of Foresto Sparso.

Background

The town has origins in Roman times; already at that time the town had in fact acquired a great notoriety due to the white dolomite quarries present on its territory, already exploited since then.

The dolomite, colored between white and pink, has been used for the realization of numerous works, even outside the national borders, among which the Angelo Mai Library and the Porta San Giacomo stand out, both located in the city of Bergamo.

How to orient yourself

Old Town

As in all neighboring countries of the Cavallina Valley, the Middle Ages left tangible signs in the village of Zandobbio: for example the layout of the town itself, which develops longitudinally and has remains of fortifications, including a medieval tower located right in the middle of the town.

Neighborhoods

Its municipal territory also includes the hamlet of Selva.

How to get around

What see

  • Parish Church of San Giorgio. Built in the sixteenth century and then renovated in the eighteenth century by Giovan Battista Caniana, it is obviously made of dolomite, the local type of very precious marble. The sculptor brothers Andrea and Gian Giacomo Manni built the main altar and the two side altars there around 1725.
Church of San Giorgio in Campis
  • Church of San Giorgio in Campis. Located on the edge of the local cemetery, the church dates back to around the 11th century and despite the numerous renovations it still has a Romanesque style structure.
The main features that identify this sacred building are its two-arched ceiling, the pulpit, but above all the bell tower with mullioned windows and the Byzantine-style frescoes, attributable to a period between the 10th and 11th centuries.
The sacristy of the building was also used, during the nineteenth century, as the mortuary of the cemetery itself. In this sense, funerary inscriptions and tombstones (both engraved and painted) dating back to the 15th century have been found.
  • Parish Church of Sant'Anna (in Selva). In the municipal area you can find another Parish Church, dedicated to Sant'Anna, in the hamlet of Selva, built in 1736.
  • Former Baths. As in the nearby town of Trescore Balneario, a spa was also opened here. The work, built by Count Guido Beroa and surrounded by a park of centuries-old trees, was inaugurated at the beginning of the nineteenth century, and was abandoned during the twentieth century. Unfortunately, for many years the complex has been in a state of complete abandonment, despite the significant position of the place, located right at the entrance to the town and a short distance from the Trescore thermal baths.
