Wing is a city of Trentino Alto Adige.

To know

Until the First World War the city was an important border station between theItaly and theAustro-Hungaric Empire.

Geographical notes

On the left bank of the Adige, not far from the border Veneto, the city is located on the busy north-south route that connects the Germanic area with the Latin area. Well served by motorway, roads and railways, it is 60 km from Verona, 51 from Trento, 27 from Riva del Garda, 17 from Rovereto.

Background

The area was inhabited, already in the first centuries after Christ, by a Germanic population, to whom the Itinerarium Antonini (3rd century AD) perhaps refers when it mentions a settlement called Ad Palatinum. The same name "Ala" could derive from the Gothic (or Lombard) halla ("portico", "hall", or "palace"). According to other hypotheses, the name could originate from a wing of the Roman army, formerly stationed in the area. Finally, according to a last hypothesis, the name could have originated simply from the shape (of wing, in fact) that the inhabited area had in ancient times.

The village is certainly ancient and of Roman origin, in fact it is known that in the imperial era it was already known as a crossroads of trade, as well as a staging post for changing horses. In the Middle Ages the center was essentially divided into two areas: one around the castle (which was destroyed during the Middle Ages by the Castelbarco family) and the other further downstream. Subsequently and until the Renaissance, defensive systems were built including the entrance doors to the village and to the south some wooden towers called bastie. This name has remained today as the toponym of the area and this is how a nearby play area for children is called.

In the sixteenth century trade developed significantly, with the cultivation of mulberry and silkworms. Activity born during the Venetian domination and a century later integrated with the production of silk velvet destined for the European market. Thus began a notable period of wealth that lasted until the eighteenth century, still to be found in the urban fabric built between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

At the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Ala and the Italian-Austrian border with the presence of shipping houses, hotels and financial police on both sides. At the beginning of the second half of the nineteenth century the construction of the railway took place. Brenner and Ala is still involved with the birth of commercial activities related to the railway but, at the same time, the silk sector enters into crisis. To demonstrate its importance in the post-medieval period, the title of city and in the nineteenth century an Imperial Regio Ginnasio was founded there, as a Trento and in the neighbor Rovereto, to demonstrate the cultural importance in the period of Habsburg domination.

The prosperous period following the construction of the Brenner tunnel ends with the outbreak of the Great War and the subsequent shifts of the borders, losing all the profits derived from border trade.
