In the thirteenth century the lordship of Castelbarco was formed in Avio and in 1198 they were invested with the castle. They soon tend to accumulate power and wealth in the valley. Upon the death without descendants of Ettore Castelbarco, the vicariate of Avio, together with those of Wing is Brentonico, come under the dominion of the Republic of Venice. • 1 Castle (Sabbionara Castle) (in Sabbionara). The first historical sources that speak of a fortress built in this place, with the name Castellum Ava, date back to 1053. In the 12th century the owners belonged to the Castelbarco family, vassals of the bishop of Trento who in 1411 gave it to the Venetians by testament. After this change of ownership, the Castello di Avio was enlarged and decorated with a chapel in honor of San Michele together with a facade bearing the coats of arms of their doges. In 1509 the manor passed into the hands of the imperial troops of Maximilian I who, after having his heraldic insignia painted, mortgaged it to the Counts of Arco. Further changes of hands followed this phase until, in the 17th century, the castle returned to the Castelbarco family.
In 1977 Emanuela Castelbarco, grandson of Arturo Toscanini, donated the Castello di Avio to FAI and the foundation immediately began to intervene with restoration and recovery works.
The castle consists of three city walls that surround the entire defensive system as a crown and can boast 5 towers, including that of the picadora, where in the past death sentences were carried out by hanging; its irregular yet harmonious perimeter rests on the ground following the difference in height. Inside the walls the streets are delimited by walls, terraces, covered passages and open towers; the doors, the walls and the interiors are illuminated by remarkable frescoes. Around the powerful keep, dating back to the 11th century, there are numerous buildings including the House of the Guards, the Chapel, the Baronial Palace and the House of Love on the top floor of the keep, all frescoed.
Scholars have identified in the frescoes the hand of two different artists, with their respective teams; the first, already active in the Dominican church of Bolzano, is the decorator of the House of Love: a cycle of high quality frescoes, full of allusions, allegories and references. Perhaps after two or three decades another artist works in the castle, of a simpler and more popular vein than the previous one; to him we owe the battles of the House of the Guards. Further discoveries were made during the careful restorations: the examination of the frescoes under ultraviolet rays revealed the presence of preparatory drawings under the current paintings.
The Pieve
The frescoes of the House of the Guards represent the arts of war necessary for the training of the knight. They are the work of a Trentino master of the mid-fourteenth century who is affected by both Veronese painting and transalpine stylistic features (marked outlines and violent lights). The frescoes in the Chamber of Love in the keep, refined and rich in a cultured symbolism (courteous painting), are attributable to a painter from the Veneto-Emilian environment who lived in the mid-fourteenth century.
  • Pieve. The parish church, in Romanesque style, was probably founded between the eighth and tenth centuries; its first mention in documents dates back to 1145, when Pope Eugene III mentions it in a papal bull.
  • 2 Parish Church of Santa Maria Assunta, via Canonica 10, 39 0464 684059. The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta preserves the rich stucco decoration (Apostolado) by Giovanni Angelo Sala from 1666.
