Caniçal is a small town in the far east of Madeira.

background

Caniçal with free trade zone on the right

Caniçal is a port city in the northeast Madeira and belongs to the district of Machico.

It is one of the oldest places on the island. Although one of the nucleus of Madeira's settlement, Caniçal remained rather isolated from the island for a long time because of its inland location, which is difficult to access. The place first achieved major importance as a military port and until the middle of the 20th century as a whaling station (small whaling museum). This changed in the mid-1960s with the construction of the so-called Caniçal tunnel (today's ER-109), which has a quick connection with the district capital Machico and the rest of the island. The port, through which all Madeira's cargo is now handled, was expanded by 2006, with an associated free trade zone and corresponding industrial zones. Thus, the port in Funchal only serves as a cruise terminal.

Certainly an advantage for the local population, Caniçal no longer offers such an idyllic picture as other places. Most tourists will be there on the way to the peninsula Ponta de Sao Lourenço drive through.

getting there

By plane

Madeira's only one Santa Cruz Airport is about 5 km south and can be reached in about 15 minutes.

By bus

The operator SAM connects Caniçal several times a day via line 113 both with the neighboring town of Machico and via the airport with the capital (bus change in Machico).

In the street

The VR-1 coastal motorway leads via Machico to Caniçal. The city is thus directly connected to the motorway network of the entire island. Alternatively, but almost parallel to the old ER-109 road.

By boat

trips

Ultimately, all destinations on the island can be reached from Caniçal. However, the place is located at the northeast end of the coastal highway, so that the longest distances have to be accepted to explore the island from here.

The following are available in the immediate vicinity:

  • The peninsula Ponta de Sao Lourenço, anyway at the same time the main attraction of the local area.
  • over Machico to Porto da Cruz and Santana, possibly combined with a further exploration of the north coast via the old, adventurous coastal road.
  • Ribeiro Frio, the cold stream, is known for trout farming, which thrives in the oxygen-rich water. Very good hiking opportunities to levadas.
