Customs clearance book - Wikivoyage, the free collaborative travel and tourism guide - Carnet de passages en douane — Wikivoyage, le guide de voyage et de tourisme collaboratif gratuit

the customs clearance book (CPD) is a customs document that identifies a traveller's motor vehicle or other valuable equipment or baggage. It is required in order to take a motor vehicle in a number of countries, but its use is decreasing worldwide. The logbook lists full details about your vehicle and its value. It can be obtained from the Automobile Club in your country. Often a bank deposit is also required.

Understand

The Carnet allows travelers to temporarily import their vehicles or other valuables such as broadcasting equipment, without having to leave a cash deposit at the border. It is, in essence, an international guarantee for the payment of customs duties and taxes to a government if the vehicle or valuables should not be re-exported from that country. Persons who temporarily import their vehicles or valuables into countries where the carnet is required must agree to obey the laws and regulations of that country and in particular the conditions of temporary importation.

The logbook contains relevant information about the vehicle - make, model, color, engine capacity, number of seats, registration number, owner and value.

In order to get a carnet, the owner must leave a deposit based on the value of the item based on age and resale value. Generally three types of deposits are accepted by automotive organizations:

  • The cash bond
  • A letter of guarantee from a banker
  • An insurance policy

Motorists can usually obtain a pass through customs from their tourism association or the National Automobile Club.
