In the north, it shares a border with Thuringia. To the east, it borders on the Bavarian administrative districts: upper and Middle Franconia. As the main river flowing through Lower Franconia is the Main, this region is called Mainfranken, especially by its inhabitants. The administrative center and capital of the district is Würzburg.
