Map of Dorum and Dorum-Neufeld

background

Dorum is a place in the unified church Wurster North Sea Coast, Lower Saxony. As early as 780, the "Land Wursten" was a free, cooperative peasant republic. A strong sense of community among the inhabitants was shaped by the constant struggle with the sea. For the first time in 1203 "Worsatia" was declared as an independent area. In many battles over the centuries the Wursters defended the freedom of their peasant state against ecclesiastical and secular claims to rule. The Stade Peace in 1525 sealed the end of the liberal, medieval Republic of Wursten. It was incorporated into the ore monastery of Bremen with tough delivery conditions.

Because of the immense dyke loads caused by the dykes, which were repeatedly damaged by storm tides, the first velvet dyke association with a joint dyke fund was founded in the state of Wursten in 1661, headed by the “Deichgraf”. The railway line from Bremerhaven-Geestemünde to Cuxhaven was opened in 1896. On May 31, 1896, the last stagecoach drove to the post office in Dorum. For part of the population, garnet catching is an important source of food and livelihood. The first shrimp cutters in the Sielhafen Wremen and Dorum have been in existence since 1909, when the great storm flood of the century in 1962 meant that the sea dyke would be raised by at least 1 m over the next decade and a half.

1974 the amalgamation of the municipalities takes place Cappel, Midlum, Padingbüttel, Dorum, Misselwarden, Mulsum and Wremen to Joint municipality of Land Wursten. On January 1, 2015, the combined municipality of Land Wursten with its seven member municipalities and the unified municipality of Nordholz merged to form the municipality of Wurster North Sea Coast. The place Dorum is no longer an independent political municipality, but a place in the unified municipality Wurster North Sea Coast. The place kept its name, also on the place name signs. All places in the municipality of Wurster North Sea Coast received the uniform postcode 27639. Inevitably, some street names also had to be changed. However, it is advisable to always include the place name in correspondence.

With the place name Dorum often becomes the district Dorum-Neufeld meant, because this is located at the Sielhafen and has developed into a holiday resort.
