Ebbs is lying in Tyrolean Lower Inn Valley at the foot of the Kaiser Mountains and is the largest village and also the lowest-lying municipality in Austria State of Tyrol. Ebbs is world-famous for horse lovers because of its Haflinger breeding on the Foal Farm Ebbs.

Ebbs lies in the valley floor of the Inn Valley, which is quite wide here. The oldest traces of settlement in the region around Ebbs are dated to the Neolithic, the year it was first mentioned in a document is 788. Ebbs is one of the original parishes in the Lower Inn Valley.

In the Middle Ages the region belonged to Bavaria, came to Tyrol from 1504 and was then also the scene of the Austro-Tyrolean wars against Bavaria in 1703 and 1809, Ebbs was repeatedly and heavily devastated.

The main livelihood in the village today is agriculture, plus tourism.

Districts of Ebbs are Ebbs, Oberndorf, Eichelwang, Kaisertal, Wagrain, Mühltal, Weidach and Buchberg.

By plane

  • The next major international airport is in Munich (Also "Franz Josef Strauss", 126 km, about a good hour's drive). From here, among other things, offer Lufthansa and their partner the Star Alliance Connections to cities in Germany, Europe and worldwide. As the second largest airport in Germany, it is connected to a growing number of cities.
  • Other airports that can be reached quickly are Innsbruck Airport (89 km, a good hour's drive) and the in Salzburg (99 km, one hour by car);

By train

The nearest train station is in Kufstein and about nine kilometers away. It is a stop for several intercity connections to Germany and Austria. Continue by taxi or bus.

In the street

Ebbs is located on the eastern bank of the Inn, which is also the state border to Germany here. The spacious approach is via the Inntal motorway running west of the Inn:

Of north (from Germany) take the A93 motorway towards Rosenheim / Dreieck Inntal Kiefersfelden until departure Symbol: ASOberaudorf, there over the Inn and further along the east bank of the Inn via Erl to Ebbs.

Of south it goes over the Austrian Inntal Autobahn A12 (Kufstein - innsbruck), at the last exit before the national border Symbol: ASKufstein Nord, then over the Inn and further on the east bank of the Inn to Ebbs.

  • The next Inn bridges are the in Niederndorf and Kufstein (except: motorway bridge). But there is an Inn ferry to Kiefersfelden on the west bank:

  • 1 Assumption Day (in the vernacular "Ebbs Cathedral"). The church is one of the most famous examples of baroque architecture in Tyrol. It was created between 1748 and 1756 as the last work by the master builder Abraham Millauer.
Particularly worth seeing are the high altar by Josef Martin Lengauer, the pilgrimage figure of a wood-carved Madonna and Child from the mid-15th century in the associated shrine and the ceiling frescoes by Josef Adam Mölk.
  • 2 Pilgrimage Church of St. Nicholas on the Buchberg just under a kilometer east of Ebbs.
The "Ebbs Castle", which has since been demolished, used to stand on the strategically favorable mountain above the Lower Inn Valley. The church itself probably has the castle chapel as its predecessor and was built in 1490 in the late Gothic period.
From the mountain you have a wide view of Ebbs and the Inn Valley, and the region is also a popular hiking area.
The frescoes from the early 16th century are worth seeing in the church.

Foal Farm Ebbs

The Ebbs foal farm is the world center of Haflinger breeding. It was rebuilt in the course of the restructuring of the Tyrolean Breeding Association after the Second World War and has since been housed in part of the Wagrein estate.

  • Wagrain Castle. The castle is already occupied as the seat of the Lords of Ebbs for the year 1421 and consists of a square residential tower from the 14th century and a late medieval residential wing added at the end of the 16th century. The Ebsser family died out with Ludwig Ebser as early as 1494, after which the owners changed repeatedly over the course of the following centuries. It is still privately owned and inhabited today, it has been extensively restored by the current owner (since 1971), it is not accessible to tourists in the Innren.
  • Haflinger stud. The Haflinger stud with 120 mares, stallions and young horses has been housed in the outbuildings of the castle since 1947. It includes two riding halls, the stables with around 100 boxes and around 8 hectares of pasture and paddocks. All world champion stallions and mares come from the Ebbs foal farm. Interesting for visitors is the stud, which can be visited, there is the possibility of riding and driving lessons. Visits to the stud farm daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., riding and driving daily except Monday, prior reservation required.
  • Haflinger and Carriage Museum (Collection of over 100 year old carriages and sleighs, exhibition on the history of the Haflinger horses)
