Erl is a passion play venue and holiday village in Austrian Lower Inn Valley / North Tyrol.

background

"Erl" has its origins in a Roman estate called "Pradium Aurelianum", as evidenced by a stone for at least the third century. This mithrass stone is kept in the parish church, making Erl one of the oldest parishes in the Inn valley.

Erl was first mentioned in a document in 788. The border village is repeatedly the scene of acts of war. In the 18th century, during the Tyrolean struggle for freedom with the Bavarians, the village was burned down several times.

Passion play

Passion plays in Tyrol in general and those in Erl are attributed to vows in difficult times of war and plague, the border village of Erl has repeatedly been the scene of acts of war.

The Passion Play in Erl is definitely documented with its oldest play text, an Easter play by the master singer Sebastian Wild from Augsburg, for the year 1613, making Erl one of the oldest Passion Play venues in Europe.

Today's Passion Play House dates back to 1959 and has 1500 seats.

The games in Erl take place every five to six years, the last time in 2013, in 2019.

Tourist Attractions

  • 1 Parish Church of St. Andrew: The current building has origins in 1682, but fell victim to several arson attacks over the centuries, the last time in 1809. Inside the church, which was then decorated in baroque style in 1820, the ceiling paintings, probably by Franz Altmutter, and a miraculous image on the high altar are especially worth seeing probably by Anton Deferegger from Kufstein. During the renovation of the church in 1980, the so-called Mithras stone with the Latin inscription was found DIM PRO SALUTE ("the divine Mithras for healing") discovered, he is now walled in the church porch.
  • Blue spring. With 700 liters of mineral-containing water per minute, it is one of the largest drinking water sources in Tyrol. The source lake is located near the inn named after the source on the access road a little south of the village.
  • Erler heart. A lake on the ascent to the Kranzhorn, the local mountain above Erl. Partly quite steep ascent from Zollhaus Windshausen (old border crossing on the road between Erl and Nussdorf am Inn).
