history

Eichenzell and its districts are among the oldest localities in the Fulda region. Eichenzell was first mentioned in a document under Abbot Hadamar (Abbot of Fulda Monastery from 927 to 956). Some districts are older than the core town. Lütter was mentioned in a document as early as 815, when the Würzburg Bishop Wolfger gave the Fulda Abbot Ratgar the right to tithe. Zillbach and Döllbach were first mentioned in a document in 852 and Rönshausen in 866.

Alarm eater

Until the end of the 18th century, Eichenzell belonged to the parish of Florenberg. On festive days and on pilgrimages, the Eichenzeller went to the church on the Florenberg. Much to the chagrin of the other churchgoers and pilgrims, the Eichenzeller were always the first despite the long journey. On the special days there was the festive wake-up call. This was a change from the everyday bread that was baked in advance. By the time the other churchgoers arrived on the mountain, the Eichenzeller had already bought everything. Therefore they were called "wake-up eaters" by the neighboring communities. Today it is the community's secret mascot. A memorial was erected for him in the castle park and he can be taken home as a plush figure in the citizens' office.
