Lauffen is a city in Heilbronn district.

background

The city of Lauffen was founded around the year 1200. It has belonged to Württemberg since 1361. Lauffen was built on the right bank of the Neckar. In the river there is an island on which the former count's castle is located. The building has been used as the town hall since 1818. Lauffen Stadt is located on the left bank of the river on a former circular mountain. The Zaber uses the old bed of the Neckar for the last few kilometers of its run and finally ends at Lauffen-Dörfle.

The world's first electric long-distance line, with which alternating current was transmitted to Frankfurt am Main, went from Lauffen in 1891.
