Saarbrücken - Saarbrücken

Saarbrücken

Saarbrücken (Rhine-Franconian: Saarbrigge) is located in the south of the Saarland and is both a university town, state capital and, with its slightly over 180,000 inhabitants, the only major city in this state. It is on the border with the French Lorraine.

background

The Saarland, with its capital Saarbrücken, was only incorporated into the Federal Republic of Germany in 1957 as the 10th federal state. Between 1947–1956 it was a Protectorate of France. Economically, it was dependent on France until the D-Mark was introduced in 1959.

Today's Saarbrücken was created in 1909 through the amalgamation of three previously independent cities Saarbrücken, St. Johann a. d. Saar and Malstatt-Burbach. It is divided into 20 districts:

  • Old Saarbrücken: It is often said about this district that it is "on the wrong side of the Saar". Here you can find the state parliament in the old casino as well as other government buildings, the Saarbrücken Castle, the Ludwigskirche - the de facto landmark of the city - as well as part of the baroque street Saar-Palatinate.
  • Altenkessel
  • Bischmisheim
  • Brebach-Fechingen
  • Buebingen
  • Burbach
  • Dudweiler: The university campus is located in this district. The Dudobad indoor pool and an outdoor pool are also located here.
  • Ensheim: Whoever arrives by plane arrives here.
  • Eschberg: A more affluent part of town away from the hustle and bustle of a city. Here you will find an outdoor swimming pool, the zoo and several paths into the city forest.
  • Eschringen
  • Gersweiler
  • Güdingen
  • Man's ear
  • Hunters joy
  • Klarenthal
  • Painting place
  • Saint Arnual: In the "Daarle" there are some good middle-class restaurants and cafés around the market.
  • Sheep bridge
  • Scheidt
  • St. Johann: The heart of the city with shopping and trendy areas, as well as a variety of cultural institutions.

Overview of public transport (Was standing 2021)

Within Großwabe Saarbrücken (Wabe 111, price level 0) for trams, trains, buses:

Saarbahn S1 in front of the Johanneskirche.

Saarbrücken is in the tariff zone of the saarVV and is largely covered by the Saarbrücken honeycomb (honeycomb number 111). A day ticket is worthwhile compared to the single ticket from the third trip. Tickets can be purchased from the DB machines in train stations, from the Saarbahn GmbH at Saarbahn stops[Note 1] as well as from bus drivers. Some hotels and hostels also offer the free of charge Saarland Card which among other things also entitles the holder to use public transport free of charge.

The Light rail SaarbahnS1 runs through Saarbrücken and in particular the Saarbrücken city center and drives to France Sarreguemines to the local train station or in the other direction to Lebach in the Saarland.

Both Fines Please note that during the usual rush hour, the buses to and from the university in particular can be so full from time to time that no further passengers can get on. In addition, you should inform yourself about any diversions and canceled stops before you start your journey, as such data is generally not entered in the timetable information. When using the international lines MS and 30 In the direction of France, it should be noted that these are not integrated into the regular tariff system and therefore a separate ticket is required despite travel within the Saarbrücken region.

In Saarbahn, bus and train it is Carrying bicycles During the week from 09:00, on the weekend all day free of charge. Otherwise, a children's card with the appropriate price level must be purchased[1].

Since the different transport companies do not cooperate with each other, it should be noted that the maps, timetable books and timetable information screens of the respective companies - especially Saarbahn GmbH - often do not list lines that are not operated by them, although they are part of the saarVV and tickets are therefore recognized. Consequently, there is also no current common route network plan for all transport companies, so that not all serving routes are listed on the Saarbahn notices.

Drive at night Night buses Municipalities throughout the Saarland with the central intersection of Saarbrücken. To use this is a separate ticket required. Some season tickets are also accepted.

By bicycle

Saarbrücken is only moderately developed for everyday trips. There is little and mostly bad infrastructure for cycling. In a nationwide comparison, cycling has a below-average share of routes[2], and is rated as below average by local cyclists in the "bicycle climate test"[3]. Nevertheless, some measures have been taken to make cycling more attractive. E.g. the opening of many one-way streets in both directions for cyclists or the opening of Bahnhofstrasse. In addition, there are many bicycle parking facilities in the city center, as well as some (some of them free of charge) Charging stations in the form of lockers in which pedelec batteries can be charged, as well as a few Repair stations and air pumps. However, there are very few covered and monitored parking facilities. The main problem remains that there is little good infrastructure for cycling and that it is mostly blocked by cars.

There is one at the main train station Call a bike station of the Deutsche Bahn. Some retailers also rent out bicycles. It is possible to take bicycles with you on public transport to a limited extent, please for more details the relevant section note.

In the street

During normal rush hours, there may be traffic jams on the city motorway and in the city center. In addition, there are many one-way streets that can make orientation difficult without a navigation device.

Park in Saabrücken is expensive. In particular, parking spaces in a central location, especially those of the operator Q-Park, such as the multi-storey car park Town hall P2 stand out due to high fees and poor service at the same time. Outside the city center, prices drop sharply. Parking in the multi-storey car park costs Quartier Eurobahnhof P16 a city society € 0.50 per 30 minutes.[4] There are also park-and-ride parking spaces, e.g. at the Saarbahn stop in Brebach. However, these are quickly used to capacity.
