To know

Geographical notes

It is a center of the Val Rendena in Trentino. It is 50 km away. from Trento, 95 from Brescia.

Background

Clearance it was once only an indication of the widening that was located in the center of the three villages of Borzago, Fisto and Mortaso. This large square in front of the church of San Vigilio was the fulcrum of the civil, social and religious life of the three communities.

A Royal Decree of 1928 established the Municipality of Spiazzo, uniting the three centers in a single municipal administration. Spiazzo was once the religious center of Val Rendena. Here stood a stele of Saturn, demolished by Bishop Vigilio of Trento; the people reacted badly and, according to tradition, the bishop was martyred here in 405 after Christ, killed with sticks and blows with wooden clogs. In the place of martyrdom the church dedicated to him was built. The Pieve di San Vigilio, in the middle of Val Rendena, was for a long time the historic Pieve of the whole valley.

The country is now experiencing a quiet economic serenity thanks to tourism that has revolutionized the economy of the whole valley, once exclusively agricultural and characterized by extreme poverty that caused a strong emigration towards abroad or towards the industrial centers of Italy of the north.

How to get around

What see

  • Church of San Vigilio. It is linked to the tradition of the martyrdom of San Vigilio vesvovo di Trento, which here allegedly took place at the hands of the angry pagan crowd for the demolition by the Bishop of a stele dedicated to Saturn. The current building was built in 1541 and incorporated the previously existing votive chapels. The internal walls, as well as the façade, are traditionally frescoed; the paintings narrate the martyrdom of San Vigilio, the baptism of Jesus, the Archangel Gabriel holding the lily while making the Annunciation, various figures of saints. The Latin cross building consists of a single nave with three chapels on each side.
Among the pictorial cycles the most valuable is certainly the work of Simone Baschenis II who in the first half of the sixteenth century frescoed eight episodes of the Gospel on the altar of the Madonna della Neve, who is the patron saint of Mortaso.
The bell tower the ancient bell tower ends with the characteristic baroque octagonal onion reminiscent of that of the Trento Cathedral and which is an architectural feature widely spread throughout the Trentino area but also in general in the Triveneto.
  • Church of Sant'Antonio. The origin of the church takes us to the 9th century. The building we see today is the result of its reconstruction in the Gothic style which was done in the fifteenth century. The interior has a single rectangular nave; the presbytery is raised by one step with respect to the hall of the faithful. As per tradition rooted in almost all the main churches of Val Rendena, the walls are completely frescoed by Dionisio Baschenis who worked on them towards the end of the fifteenth century depicting the themes of the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, the Deposition, the descent into Limbo .
The frescoes also affect a large part of the external walls, where you can admire pictorial cycles with episodes from the life of Sant'Antonio Abate, as well as figures of saints, the Madonna and Child, the Trinity. The most prominent figure on the facade is a San Cristoforo; above the portal a cycle of the Annunciation.
The beautiful bell tower is made of granite with a double order of Romanesque mullioned windows. The sacred building is surrounded by the cemetery, a tradition that has been preserved in the Valley even in Pinzolo in the church of San Vigilio, also frescoed by a Baschenis, and a Carisolo in the cemetery church of Santo Stefano.
  • Cort da Togno. The first inhabited area of Spiazzo is found in Borzago when traveling through the valley from the south. The Court was the seat during the Great War of the Royal Military District Captaincy of Tione. It is the internal courtyard of some buildings on the walls of which the local artist Vigilio Pellizzari Togno created murals with captions, testimony of an art free range made up of playful references to life and popular sayings. In short, the court represents a sort of open-air art gallery of the purest burlesque tradition.
  • Adamellina White War Museum. It is located in the building of the old schools of Spiazzo and collects a very rich collection of objects that were brought to high altitudes in the military posts where during the Great War they fought in the trenches on the Adamello, Presanella, Ortles and Cevedale. This material, which was to guarantee the survival of the soldiers in the snow and frost of over 3000 meters above sea level, were then gradually recovered once the conflict was over. A new figure of worker was born: the recovering which in fact recovered and resold what could still be used.
Together with the objects, many of the more than 3000 original photographs are also exhibited, which have been recovered and collected in memory and as evidence of the war events that took place on the high altitude fronts.
