Southern Lower Saxony (Südniedersachsen) is a geographical region of the German federal state of Lower Saxony.

Geographical notes

The south of the Lower Saxony is sandwiched between the states of the North Rhine-Westphalia to the west, ofHesse and of Thuringia south and of the Saxony-Anhalt at East. The landscapes are largely hilly and include the western portion of the Harz Mountains whose slopes are covered with woods. These culminate in the 971m-high Wurmberg mountain, the highest point in the region. The Solling is a much lower chain (527.8) located at the point where the borders with theHesse and the North Rhine-Westphalia but it is covered with dense fir, beech and oak woods that attract enthusiasts of hiking or biking.

Territories and tourist destinations

Urban centers

  • Bad Gandersheim - Famous spa town as well as for its Romanesque collegiate church for a huge 210-year-old beech.
  • Bad Sachsa - Renowned for its thermal baths built at the end of the 19th century.
  • Bodenwerder - Idyllic village in the valley of the Weser river, with an important tourist flow.
  • Dassel - Town of 10,000 inhabitants on the north-eastern side of the Solling and base for excursions to the woods that cover the slopes of the mountain massif.
  • Duderstadt - Renowned for its town hall, one of the oldest in Germany, for the tower on the Wester river and for its half-timbered houses gathered around the two large churches of San Ciriaco and San Servazio, both with mighty towers.
  • Einbeck - Famous since the Middle Ages for the production of the beer of the same name obtained from the fermentation of buckwheat, Einbeck it also features half-timbered houses with a particular style that overlook the central market square.
  • Goslar - Birthplace of Emperor Henry IV, Goslar it was from above meioevo until 1988 an important center for the extraction and processing of metals. Today its mines are included in the UNESCO list of world heritage sites, as well as its historic center which hinges on the magnificent market square.
  • Göttingen (Göttingen) - Famous for its university founded in 1737.
  • Hann. Münden - Called the "city of the three rivers", as it is located at the point where the Weser receives the waters of the rivers Werra and Fulda, Hann. Münden it is an important tourist center for the possibilities of excursions to the nearby Kaufung and Bramwald woods and the Münden nature park.
  • Holzminden - Small university town in a charming location on the banks of the River Weser, Holzminden it constitutes another base for excursions to the forests of Solling and the forest of Moorbirsk, among extensive marshes.
  • Northeim - Second largest city in the south of Lower Saxony, Northeim has a well-preserved historic center, consisting mainly of half-timbered houses of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries that overlook narrow alleys. To the north of the town there are twelve small artificial lakes that are suitable for recreational activities such as swimming, sailing and fishing.
  • Nörten-Hardenberg - Town 10 km north of Göttingen from which it is separated by a series of hills of modest height covered with woods (Nörtener Wald).
  • Osterode - In a narrow valley of the Harz mountains, Osterode it is bathed by the river Söse whose course has been blocked further upstream by a dam which has given rise to an artificial lake suitable for sport fishing.
  • Stadtoldendorf - Village of 5,000 inhabitants on the edge of the Solling-Vogler nature park.
  • Uslar - Tourist center on the route Deutsche Märchenstraße (German Fairy Tale Route), whose stages are made up of 70 villages that were the backdrop to the tales of the Brothers Grimm.
