Map of Brake (Unterweser)

Already before 1100 fishermen and farmers settled on their Wurten on the Weser. Brake was first mentioned in May 1384 in a document as Brake to Harghen (Harrien). In Brake, the cargo from larger ocean-going vessels was reloaded onto barges, which then took the goods to Bremen. In 1756, Brake was first mentioned as a port. In the 19th century, however, Brake developed into an important location for shipping. Brake's upswing ended with the re-establishment of Bremerhaven in 1827. From 1848 to 1852 Brake was the home port of the German imperial fleet. On May 1, 1856, Brake received town charter. The location on the deep fairway of the Unterweser was decisive for the historical development of the city and the competitiveness of its port. In 1873 it was connected to the railway network. Today the port serves as a transshipment point for the traditional bulk goods grain, fodder and fertilizer, sulfur as well as the bulk cargo wood, paper, iron and steel. In addition, the handling of project cargo, general cargo and heavy cargo as well as containers is becoming increasingly important and forms a further focus. Important industrial companies have settled in Brake. Brake is connected to the opposite bank of the Weser via the high-speed ferry Brake – Sandstedt.
The inimitable maritime flair of Brakes is provided by the shipping museum, the sea and inland ports, long sandy beaches and the largest river island in Europe, the island of Harriersand, which can be reached by ferry Guntsiet in the summer months for pedestrians and cyclists can be reached in a few minutes. Brake is a bike-friendly city. It is located on the most popular long-distance cycle route in Germany, the Weserradweg. Cyclists on the Deutsche Sielroute, along the Melkhüs or the Unterweser cycle path, also like to rest in Brakes' cozy inner city. A diverse and lively club and cultural scene ensure leisure and cultural activities Brommy bath, as well as long sandy beaches and much more.
