Brake (Lower Weser) is the county seat of the district Wesermarsch in Lower Saxony. The city belongs to the region Oldenburger Land and since 2005 to the European metropolitan region of Bremen / Oldenburg. Brake is in the center of the city square Bremerhaven, Bremen, Oldenburg and Wilhelmshaven directly on the west bank of the Lower Weser.

Already before 1100 fishermen and farmers settled on their Wurten on the Weser. Brake was first mentioned in May 1384 in a document as Brake to Harghen (Harrien). In Brake, the cargo from larger ocean-going vessels was reloaded onto barges, which then took the goods to Bremen. In 1756, Brake was first mentioned as a port. In the 19th century, however, Brake developed into an important location for shipping. Brake's upswing ended with the re-establishment of Bremerhaven in 1827. The location on the deep fairway of the Unterweser was decisive for the historical development of the city and the competitiveness of its port. In 1873 it was connected to the railway network. Today the port serves as a transshipment point for the traditional bulk goods grain, fodder and fertilizer, sulfur as well as the bulk cargo wood, paper, iron and steel.
