Arrive
By plane
Atlantic Airways flies several times daily between the Faroe Islands and Copenhagen, daily to Billund and Aalborg and twice a week to Iceland and Edinburgh (Scotland). In summer there is also frequent frequent London and Stavanger flown, while flights to Iceland continue to Narsarsuaq on the southern tip of Greenland.
The airport is located on the island of Vágar, which is connected by a tunnel to Streymoy on which the capital is located. During the day, buses run to and from Vágar. If you land in the evening and want to go to Tórshavn or further, you must book a taxi in advance. The cost is usually 180 to 200 crowns.
By car
The Faroe Islands are an archipelago and can therefore only be reached by car by boat. The Smyril Line sails from Scotland (Scrabster), Denmark (Hanstholm) and Norway (Bergen) via the Faroe Islands to Iceland (Seyðisfjörður).

Travel around
Strandfaraskip Landsins is the national transport company of the Faroe Islands. This sells tickets for buses and ferries. The larger islands of Vágar, Streymoy, Eysturoy and Borðoy are connected by tunnels under the ocean. Smaller islands such as Nólsoy and Mykines can only be reached by ferry. The main office of Strandfaraskip Landsins is located in Tórshavn, where you can obtain timetable tables. Knowledge of Danish is an advantage. The buses also sell their tickets on board. In Tórshavn and the surrounding area the buses are free.
Language
In addition to Danish, the Faroe Islands speak their own language, Faroese, a northern European language that closely resembles Icelandic. Some Faroese speak some English, but it is helpful if you can speak a little Danish, as Danish is considered their second language for the residents. Those interested in Faroese can obtain courses for this: in Tórshavn there is a bookshop that sells language books. The spoken variant of this language is especially difficult to decipher, since the pronunciation — unlike Icelandic — differs greatly from the written language. For example, the village Kirkjubour pronounced as 'chirchebuer'.
To buy
Cost
The Faroe Islands are expensive. The Faroese krone is used here, which is equivalent to the Danish krone. The prices reflect the fact that most products have to be imported from outside. A glass of wine easily costs € 10. On the outskirts of Tórshavn are a few budget supermarkets, where cheese, milk, meat, beer and everyday foods are available. Take into account a conversion surcharge from your bank if you pay with the card. It is not customary to tip in restaurants: the service is included in the price.
Food
The cuisine of the Faroe Islands is Scandinavian and therefore contains a lot of fish and raw vegetables. Pilot whale, a dolphin-like species, is slaughtered every year in large numbers, but the meat is mainly intended for local consumption. If you nevertheless find it in a restaurant, count on more than 300 crowns for a medium-sized portion.
Going out
Torshavn has a great nightlife, while the smaller towns only have a few nightclubs.
