Curved mass is a village in Schleswig-Holstein, southwest of Lübeck. The place is both a municipality of the office Berkenthin in the north of the district Duchy of Lauenburg as well as a district of the St. Jürgen district of the Hanseatic city Lübeck. Krummesse is a well-rounded village, a village with two mayors and two license plates (RZ and HL). The district boundary runs in such a curious way that the place has been in the Guinness Book of Records for several years.

Partnerships with Krummesse

Krummesse was mentioned for the first time in a document from the Bishop of Ratzeburg on April 3, 1194. As early as the middle of the 14th century, some family members of the Knights von Crummesse began to sell parts of their possessions to the council of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck. To this day, the sale of about half the village is the reason for the separation of the village into a Lübeck and a Lauenburg part with the complicated demarcation. An area swap between the Hanseatic city of Lübeck and the municipality of Krummesse in 2005 did not remove the complicated demarcation, but simplified it somewhat. Nonetheless, some of the borders still run along roadsides and in the middle of roads or, as in one case, through the middle of a building. Belonging to two different administrations repeatedly leads to strange occurrences, most recently during the corona pandemic in 2021.

The approximately 2800 inhabitants of the village still live in a grown place with a village character despite the intensive construction activity in the post-war years. The center of Krummesse is the intersection of Hauptstrasse and Beidendorfer Weg.

A considerable part of the building of the place is today about the community suitability Biogas plant supplied with district heating in Beidendorfer Weg. Further expansion is planned.

Since 1990 Krummesse has repeatedly been named the “Most Beautiful Village” in the Duchy of Lauenburg.

The hall is divided into two naves by two slim central pillars. If a wedding couple wants to go to the altar there, they have to separate because of the pillars in the walk to the altar. During the renovation in 1933, wall paintings from the time it was built were uncovered and partially supplemented. The limestone stoup next to the south portal also dates from the time it was built. The mighty four-edged west tower was only added around 1400.

The name of the mill goes back to the von Brömbsen family from Lübeck who owned the mill from 1618 to 1757. The mill was supplied with water from the Kastorfer Mühlenbach, which was dammed up in ponds. The mill no longer has a water wheel. Today the Krummesse grain distillery is located in the buildings.
  • 3  Canal lock. Although commercial shipping has steadily decreased in recent years, the Elbe-Lübeck Canal represents an important connection between the Elbe and the Baltic Sea. The canal is also an important and interesting alternative to the sport shipping industry Kiel Canal. The lock in the Elbe-Lübeck Canal, built in 1900, is still operated exclusively by water power today (hotopp principle) and represents a monument to the early industrialization. Detailed information on how this lock works can be found in a brochure from the Waterways and Shipping Administration, here as a pdf download. The lock is easily accessible thanks to the cycle path that runs directly past the west bank. It is therefore very easy to observe the lock process from close up.

Krummesse Castle in the Wikipedia encyclopediaKrummesse Castle (Q1012753) in the Wikidata database. The former Krummesse Castle was the seat of the Knights of Krummesse, who were among the most influential knightly families of the Middle Ages in the Duchy of Saxony-Lauenburg. It is located west of the Elbe-Lübeck Canal, halfway between the courtyards of the modern Lübeck city estate Krummesse and the canal bridge. The castle hill with a diameter of approx. 80 m has been preserved to this day, albeit damaged, and is still clearly visible behind a single-family house development. It is surrounded by ditches and silted shallow waters. The moated castle was destroyed in the Thirty Years War and replaced by the early modern manor to the west of it. The keep is said to have been present in the remains of the wall in the 19th century.

To go biking

The former towpath, which has become a very popular route for cyclists, runs along the Elbe-Lübeck Canal from Lübeck to Lauenburg. The entire route is part of the Iron Curtain Europe Cycle Route EV 13 (Iron Curtain Trail, short: ICT; in Germany also known as the “Green Belt” cycle path). On the way, idyllic villages with thatched cottages, magnificent mansions, venerable churches and nice inns tempt you to take a break. There is a cycling map here as a pdf download.

In addition, there is an abundance of beautiful places in the entire Duchy of Lauenburg Hiking trails.

in the 7 Krummesser Moor you can also hike wonderfully. The moor is a large, largely uncut, low moor complex, surrounded by poor, partly open, partly afforested areas. Larger areas of land are only used extensively. Here you can enjoy a wide view, the open landscape with its reed areas and small groups of trees in wonderful tranquility. There is also the opportunity to hear and observe red-backed shrike, as well as the brown and stonechat. A restoration of largely natural site conditions is planned through renaturation measures.

The 8 Can breakageKannenbruch in the encyclopedia WikipediaKannenbruch in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsKannenbruch (Q57781568) in the Wikidata database west of the Kronsford main road is designated as a 25 hectare natural forest reserve. The Kannenbruch is a special recreational forest, which is characterized by its biodiversity, the stock of trees and its star-shaped hiking trails. A characteristic feature of the planning in the Biedermeier period was the creation of an aisle system in the form of an eleven-pointed star around a central roundabout. From the former forester's house in the northeast of the Kannenbruch, which is now a listed building, you can take one of the 11 paths to the center and then return via one of the other "rays". The tree population mainly includes beech, pine and spruce. In addition to the native tree species, a number of American oaks were planted around the rondel, a plane tree and an acacia and Douglas fir trees in the 19th century. The swampy quarry forest character leads to an extremely species-rich spring vegetation. These include primroses, wood anemones, lark's spur and gold star, the rare forest foamwort and spotted orchid.
