Lindo

Lindo (Lindos or Λίνδος) is a town (former municipality) of the island of Rhodes, since 2011 a fraction of the capital of the island.

To know

Lindos looks like a typical Greek-style village with white houses separated by winding cobbled lanes (steep and slippery, but shaded by boungaville and climbing plants) that climb from the bay to the stunning Acropolis. Once a magnificent fishing village, it is today a traditional tourist destination and has lost some of its charm. The beautiful beach of fine sand is cluttered with colorful umbrellas that offer shelter from the scorching sun to numerous families. Few of the luxurious boats that docked in the harbor a few years ago. The circulation of cars in the center is not allowed and the construction of new hotels is prohibited so as not to further compromise its beautiful landscape. In the surrounding area, however, accommodation facilities have sprung up that are not always integrated into the landscape and host tourists from all over Europe at often high prices.

Background

Ancient Greek city (which Homer also refers to) that flourished in the Doric era, becoming the main center of the island until the fifth century BC. and whose inhabitants founded the Sicilian colony of Gela in 688 BC.

What see

Acropolis of Lindos
  • 1 Acropolis. Ecb copyright.svg12,00 €. Simple icon time.svgcloses at 17:40. The Acropolis dominates from its 116 meters above the village and the two splendid bays of Lindos and San Paolo (Agios Pavlos, with a very narrow access to the sea so as to make it look like a lake; the legend tells that the rocks closed in a hug to protect S Paolo who landed here during a storm). The entrance to the acropolis can be reached on foot or by mule (€ 8).
    - Greek remains: the sculptures in the living rock of the hemicycle and the trireme, probably the work of Pitocritus (the artist who created the Nike of Samothrace exhibited in the Louvre museum)
    - Greco-Roman remains: the upper part of the Acropolis with the temple dedicated to the goddess Athena Lindia (being restored with reconstructive rather than conservative criteria)
    - Medieval remains: the splendid castle, wonderfully restored in the Italian period, with the steep and narrow stairways as the only access and the semi-destroyed Byzantine church of San Giovanni.

The exterior has the characteristic red domes that stand out against the white of the walls and an original stone bell tower. Panagia Church (Q1897830) on Wikidata

  • Up there (the last venue on the way to the acropolis). Suggestive terrace overlooking the whole city.
