Location of Pondicherry Union Territory

Puducherry includes four districts that are not connected to each other and are located on the east and west coasts. They have in common that, unlike the rest of India, they were French colonies. When India gained independence in 1947, this initially only applied to the British and not to the French territories. It was not annexed to India until 1954, and after France had given its approval in 1962, the four districts officially became union territory in 1963.
